this black square showed up on my screen and i can't get rid of it.
wtf is it and how do i turn it off?

it moves around with my cursor, and it has a drop shadow, so i imagine it's some kind of feature...

apple shift 3 is all screen capture and apple shift 4 is a direct screen capture, but both should yeildl png files types.

have you tried a software update? it may solve all and what ever is happening.

The black square can be turned off with System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing tab > VoiceOver > click the Off button. OR, you can just toggle VoiceOver (which is what the black square is from) on or off with Command-F5.
