So, there is an agency in London that has a decent looking site presenting pretty neat (I didn't say original) work and hasn't heard of the mill? OK..
I'm not sure who did the original logo but chances are we'll soon get to know this from people who did the site http://www.the-mill.com

didn't engage do the mill post production?
if in an interview situation i'd make a joke about it and see what they say...

as an identity that the public can identify with, i definitely think that the icodesign of the word "mill" works better as it is easier to read.
the-mill version of "mill" to anyone but designers or people who KNEW the name wouldnt even register as letters to most people.
if you hadnt seen it before, i bet if id showed you those lines and asked "what does that say?" you wouldnt have said "mill".
i think you need to KNOW what it says before you realise what it says.nothing wrong with stealing an idea as long as you improve on it.
and ico certainly have in my opinion

Shit happens...remind me the quark logo...
And you're right..the lack of awareness is unforgivable...
But..if they pay well....go for it.

I'm in the middle of a large amount of interviews at the moment and I've been shocked by certain things in the London design industry,
Some studios are rude to the point of making want to leave the interview. The arrogance astounds me sometimes. As if they would be doing you a huge by letting you work for them. I see jobs as a 2 way thing, you're both doing eachother a service.
One company I contacted and sent my details and website to offered me a placement! When I politely declined saying that I was a mid-weight designer, they said "well if you need a placement in the future" I imagine they hadn't even looked at the work.
Oh well, I've had some really positive ones too, people who seem like genuinely nice interesting people with no chips on their shoulders.
What a crazy business.

don't think they ever show it on its own. that'll be the guidelines for you.

I was tacking a look at your site (great work by the way..you shouldn't have trouble looking for a job.. ) and the Dunhill logo looks pretty much like the The mill logo...don't you think???

(Apr 4 07, 02:32)haha, that's funny
except for the fact that I only re-drew the dunhill logo and that is predates the Mill by about 80 years.

some words with nicely spaced ascenders are just asking for that kind of blocky treatment, ie
dublin
:)

-------its on its own on the top left of their site!
"The Mill" under it is meant to be "homepage" in the navigation, thats not part of the logo/identity

At Concrete we used to start each project by openly discussing who/what we were going to rip off...

That sounds like London Baskerville... if your not an arogant prick you just ain't cool.

(i would...)

it's a certain reality of certain places and spaces, certainly... doesn't really bother me, as long as there is a sense of authenticism, or at least knowing that you could've come up with the idea originally...

Baskerville, why don't you bring it up in the interview? I mean, it will only benefit you to display your sense of integrity and also general design awareness. Talk to them about it, and see what they have to say for themselves. I am sure their response will give you the exact feeling/criteria to understand if you want to work with them.
As for The Mill logo itself – I was under the impression that Made Thought worked on it – but perhaps they have only worked on some of the brand collateral.

so who designed the Mill logo then?
One of the things I hate about my current job is that other designers are prepared to rip stuff off. I would never do it, and I'm having trouble using a pattern someone in my studio has 'designed' as it's a direct rip off of a pattern in the Stella McCartney store. I just wish the client knew (they are a very big client)

good times.
