I have a client that has a business called Pac Man. They're in the packaging industry.
Abiding by copyright laws etc. do I have to steer clear of any resemblance to the original Pac Man logo font etc???

Its trademark law you need to worry about... it really depends on what the client wants to do.. they might want to deliberately go close to infringing Namco's trademark if they see some benefit in doing that... but if they haven't said that in the brief, I guess yes you want to steer clear?

No:
Yellow pies, ghosts, pellets, power pellets, mazes.Stay away from the current trend of big, bulky rendered type.
good luck.

Actually you're clear as far as parody is concerned.
If you do tread on that ground, at least be funny.

tagically good name for a packing company

You should be fine. I see products all over that have to do with PacMan and none of them seem to be official.

I should name my extermination company Mickey Mouse Killers

Yeah it's a packaging company - nothing to do with gaming.
The unfortunate thing, is that trying to get the "PacMan look" without actually using the mac man font and yellow pie, ghosts etc is a challenge...

cherries
just get anything and pixelate it.
- 23kon0
agentfour's pixelating idea is good.
if they have a big range of boxproducts they do then why not get examples and stack them up to make something that looks like a pixelated image and photograph it. or get the same visual thing going with vector gfx :)

Hey I have an idea, there is a club in NYC, it is called the culture club, I have never went inside, but I heard it is 80's music or theme. Anyway, they use Pacman as the logo. it is huge on a sign outside the building: here's their website, which also has the logo.
so why don't you contact them and ask if they needed to ask persmisson or something, or if they know anything about usage:
