backing up now....

FYI: it was a Mac 17"/1.67 PB.
I found failure rates online of the stock Toshiba 80GB drive and apporx. 12-18% have failed.

that really sucks - but sorry i gotta ask - how on earth could you go 6 months without backing up your work? not even to DVD!?!
i keep a jobs/folder archiving system which gets burned to DVD every month or 4GB whichever comes first.
same system applies to incoming mp3's etc etc.

two words- disk warrior

$2200?!!!
there are other ways of recovery - no?
- CALLES0
i cant wait to go out tonight and back that shit up

I went for like a year without backing up and I lost all my work.
Twice.
Now I have an external HD.
:)

i have paid double that to extract data from a lost drive.
if the drive is physically broken, there are means available that require it being rebuilt in new hardware and spun up very carefully.
little, simple sorftware ain't gonna cut it in those situations....

who me?
nope!

(Apr 12 07, 11:26)but unfortunately most people have no way of knowing if that is the case or not. would it not be best to try the simple means first before immediately sending it off? i doubt any data recovery firm ever told a potential client they had a problem that they could fix themselves with cheap software
- madirish0
yes, true for sure. i took the statement to assume this would have already been done, seeing as davey_g knows the drive will not mount and/or spin up.
but yes, of course- software first.

There was so much ambiguity surrounding whether or not I was going to get my information back when the sent my hard drive off.
In the end, it will cost almost as much as getting new machine, if not more.

my condolences--the ultimate nightmare
- davey_g0
The drive would not mount. It was whining and crunching, very loud. Finally got it to mount by an Apple tech and it took an hour to copy a 75KB file...so had to send it off to a lab for the diagnostic or possible repair.
In this case, Disk Warrior, Data Rescue or any shit like that, can't even touch it.
Some stuff was backed up...but blame it on being slack and really busy I guess.
Lesson learned. *reaches for Kleenex

I deleted 7000 photos last month. Cost me $700 to get them back.
They rocovered about 97% of them. Well worth the cash.
- Jaline0
wait. were you the one who didn't know where his photos where from an official shoot and couldn't have them taken again?
