SCEA has announced that the 20GB version of PlayStation 3 is to be discontinued in North America after consumers overwhelmingly favoured the 60GB model. An official statement reads, “At launch, we offered two separate models of PlayStation 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base. Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of 90 per cent in favor of the 60GB SKU, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly. “Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America.” SCEA spokesperson Dave Karraker confirmed that the decision to stop selling the 20GB PS3 is “based purely on consumer and retailer demand” - adding that the lower-spec model is being outsold by the 60GB model “10 to 1″. According to Karraker, this illustrates that “consumers are willing to pay more for advanced technology in a gaming console”.

    Eh, 9 to 1?

Probably because everyone bought the 60 gig0r in hopes to make a killing on eBay.

To be honest, I never understood why they had two models.

Who would ever want the 20 when there is a 60 available?

are u fucking idiots? killing off the 20 gig --- the more AFFORDABLE ONE -- the one that normal fuckgin people who dont need all the luxuries of 40 more useless gigs -- the one that was completely sold out because everyone bought them.

its a fucking cheap ass move because they want to profit as much as possible off the 60 gig one. fuck sony.

    exactly.

gruise, you need a therapist kid.

  • MrD0

maybe some one should read the specs for both models and also price point for them before saying anything

  • MrD0

    60 gig

CompactFlash®, SD Memory Card and Memory Stick Duo™ card slots

    Wireless network connectivity (Wi-Fi)

Pre-installed removable 60GB hard disk drive (HDD)

this is what 20 gig doesnt have and its 599 instead of 499. that 499 sure is way more afforadble than the 599

  • Jaline0

I think the 20GB can be modified or something, right?

  • MrD0

i have no idea but dollar value percentage wise, that extra 100 isnt bad

unless you go for xbox where core is 299 and premium is 399.
same dollar amount but percentage per dollar is greater.

also, xbox, you can add stuff to it with out buying in to the big mega pricey console. i just think 499 or 599 at the gate is just too much

doesn't matter..the 20gb version has been long gone, the announcement is no surprise. It's very simple, when Sony came out with PS3 they knew they had to hype up the console and eventually compare it with XBox 360. That's where the $499 crippled PS3 came into play.

They had a comparable console to XBox 360 but they could say oh we have a Blu-ray on ours. Now, keep in mind, they had to do this in order to justify the extremely high cost of the 60gb version, otherwise they would've lost right away. The press would kill them and btw, it still does as to be honest XBox 360 + HD-DVD player + wifi + 2 controllers + remote + headset + 2 games pretty much equals PS3 60gb with HDMI and Blu-Ray, not to mention that with PS3 you don't get an extra controller, a headset nor the remote.

Of course when I compare the two I'm talking about beginning of the year and XBox 360 had all those things included as a bundle.

So, it becomes very clear, for Sony to sell PS3 they needed a cheaper marketing version that will allow them to say, hey you see we have $499 version that beats anything that MS has with XBox 360 for the same price. That's how it all started.

Everyone pretty much forgot to mention that by iSuppli, Sony is losing $307 on every 20GB PS3 that it sells and $241 on every 60GB PS3 and this is why they killed it off. Forget about that crap about 9:1. It's just a justification. Of course it's 9:1 when they released 20gb version in such small numbers that the only thing you could buy was 60gb version.

    Just my 2 cents.

That's cool. Fuck 20GB hard drives... they are like soooooo 5 years ago. I'm surprise they even bothered in the first place.

I've got a 60GB version on the way, bought it online... 40% discount code.

    Ahhhhhh... sweet.

  • Jaline0

Boz, you have some good points.

They would've gotten more heat for not having a 20gb than for having one. And now that they've established the product, they can get rid of it.

I still think the marketing needs work. Plus, the price is ridiculous for the average person.

Yeah Jaline and look what they are doing with Japan. They still sell 20gb version there. It's pretty simple, they need to keep fighting and maintaing the lead in Japan over XBox 360, not to mention that the 20gb version in Japan costs $441.

It's pretty much the strategy again. They cut the 20gb from everywhere else, still keep it in Japan because they need it there very bad, they give a ridiculously high price in Europe for the 60gb PS3 as they think they can get away with it and compensate the manufacturing losses (PS3 60gb in Europe is almost $900) and they can't keep losing money in US so they just keep the 60gb version.

Their tactics are very obvious. But I'm pretty sure they are aware that PS3 already lost. Even Sony's CEO is doubting the PS3 and hints of possible failure and says:

"“Wii is a wonderful device, but has a different target audience. If we fail, it is because we positioned PS3 as the Mercedes of the video game field. "

The whole article shows that he's sure that Blu-Ray will win but not so sure about PS3.

So the only thing that Sony is banking on at this moment is pretty much Blu-Ray. This is why they force the 60gb version, because the people who buy PS3 60gb are mostly buying it now for the Blu-Ray player, since the PS3 as BD player is still a bargain as a player but still a poor console, as the games are pretty much non-existent.

I just also read in Game Informer that a lot of game publishers have the games ready for PS3, but they are waiting for PS3 to increase the install base as they can't recover their expenses with such small amount of PS3s. With prices that Sony has, I highly doubt that will happen soon. IMO that is.

who cares about the avg person jaline? we are talking about big boys and their toys.

viewing the gaming community as general consumers is plain stupid
