do the backend

I am working on a project that can take an html site (or a site with basic temlate functionality, like includes, loops, etc) and let a webdesigner designate regions to be editable by their clients.
Photo and file uploads, photo cropping, text editing, document authoring, etc.
The web designer could then layout a backend administration tool with inputs to edit the regions they have chosen.
Does this sound at all useful to anyone?
Would anyone pay for something like this? if their clients could login anytime and make changes?

Isn't that exactly what Adobe Contribute does?

this thread title is so gay that i couldn't get myself to read the rest of your brownfingered bottom smelly thread.

What exactly are you looking for?
You have this built? You need an interface? You have an interface you need someone to do the backend?
I have made custom CMS’ in the past and yes ... companies pay top dollar for them.
Not to me of course. :X

contribute is heavily geared toward dreamweaver as an authoring tool...
also, contribute is very weird in the times i have tried to help people use it
this would be very basic and simple
intended for people who only do html+css, no php or databases (although i would want to support db stuff eventually) and allow them to offer this service in a branded way
would anyone pay monthly for such a thing?
- myobie0
i build custom web applications for people and i was just testing the waters
i been thinking of making a stripped down, basic admin generating tool for people who don't know how or for projects with lower budgets
and yes, the title is...well, it's a title
- flavorful0
Monthly? No.
Perhaps yearly... I am not sure exactly what you are going for still.
If you want to make money off of this, you need to host every thing and you can not give the Database Diagram, tables.fields and PHP or ASP away to host off-site or you must have a very stringent policy as to why, and what they can alter to ensure that if they modify this ... your don’t get screwed.
- myobie0
the title is meant to convey that my app would build the backend for you
no, i don't have this built, but i been thinking about it
- myobie0
this would be a hosted app
all changes would be exportable as html
it could ftp up the changes to somewhere remotely if needed
but yeah, it would not allow any scripting inside of it unless i decided to support sandboxed versions of stuff (or have my own templating language or something like liquid)

lol... funny you bring this up, I've got a proposal out to someone for something similar.
Yes, for the right market, IMO it could work. Plenty of opensource CMS' around to get ideas from for the custom app.

Yea, I have been making one on my free time (none) the past ... well forever and keep scrapping it when I rethink the entire thing.
I think almost every developer likes to make their own software.
I build stuff like these for companies, but I would rather make mine with the features I want, heh.

flava:
i got the idea of letting a designer layout a backend all drag and drop like with form elements, then wireing them up to parts of the page
sound interesting?
would you still want to do your own thing? even for some really small budget jobs?
i figure if it's quick enough and easy enough, some people will use it cause it saves time or cause they don't know how themselves
- flavorful0
I was more coming from the aspect that me, you, & joyride are all doing the same kind of thing ... being that we are all developers.
And developers like creating their own applications.
I don’t think I would ever pay for anything that I could do on my own; but yes, your idea sounds interesting ... much like this same idea has been tossed around in and worked on in my own head, and by many others.
- joyride0
oh, i'm not gonna dev it, I'm gonna create the func. spec and help architect it. then have it developed. I'm just waiting on some funding
- flavorful0
I can not wait until I stop developing and just tell people to do this and do that, hahah.
- madirish0
i do this with Plone as the technology set, extensively. i hope you are not planning on creating the CMS from scratch.
also, there are many, many hosted apps such as the one you outline. and people pay well for them.
good luck.
- myobie0
haha
yeah flav, i am looking to hire someone later this year for that very reason
yeah, i love building custom webapps and i really have just been thinking of making this hosted app for simple sites for myself, just so i could take on smaller jobs and not have to worry about the cms (cause these sites don't have much content to manage) and just focus on the design
i think photo cropping/resizing/etc is a big one...and good typography
also, not adding code where it's not asked for
yeah, i may do this, but it would be on the side...
i am not looking for funding cause i don't want to answer to anyone else, but good luck man
- joyride0
yeah, my funding is more of a partnership. For my idea to work I need access to their customers, hence the partnership. I'll let them make some $$$ for the access. If I went it han solo it would be 337% harder to get the market penetration. I'm been looking at joomla for a proof of concept until things are a go
- myobie0
i am probly just gonna do a straight up rails app
my last couple rails apps have been pretty stable and successfully received by the clients
either way, good luck man
keep me posted, i would love to see someone do this right, even if it's not me
- Daro0
ok, I thought this was an sodomy thread that's why I kept away until I was consumed by curiousity.
The idea sounds good, I'd pay for a simple cms since I'm not a programmer.
