Hey Hi.
I Just recently turned full-time freelance and I'm wondering what you might suggest charging for a branding package. Let's say a logo and business cards?
Any insight would be super. Thanks, guys.

To me its not just saying an amount, you have find out their budget?
How big of a company are they?
What kind of company are they?5K is out of budget for some small businesses, but 5K isn't for larger. blah...blah

5k.
I've decided I hate designing so they have to pay me lots in order to do it.
No wait. I LOVE designing. I HATE clients. They still have to pay me a lot.

The idea of basing a price on the size of a business and the budget they're working with seems to be a reasonable way to go about things.
Though I suppose it's not exactly professional to be like "so, how much money you got to give me anyway?". I guess you really just have to judge for yourself what financial position the client is in based on the information they give you. Could be a little difficult in some cases?

(May 11 07, 11:17)"what's the first thing a realtor would ask you? a car salesman? usually it's "what's you budget?" i wouldn't phrase it as you have, but you really do need to get an idea of a client's budgetary and scheduling concerns before you come with any type of proposal.
the name of the game is controlling expectations. that way no one is expecting something unrealistic, and it also allows you to look as though you are going above and beyond.
the saying goes: when in doubt, don't over promise and under deliver. under promise and over deliver.

(May 11 07, 11:17)size of company and how much money they make is totally legit criteria.. it reflects the scope and scale at which the logo you design for them will be used. if i design a logo at it ends up on the tail of a fleet of private jets, i wanna get payed large.
also consider and discuss how they would like their final files. if they expect a thorough styleguide, that can be a massive project in itself and should be part of your estimate.
oh yeah.. and estimate.. always estimate your cost w/ # of concepts proposed. some people can be extremely fussy about their logos (rightfully so)and drag out the process FOREVER.

12,500$

Thanks kindly john and horton!
Some great feedback that makes a ton of sense. It really helps me get some things straight in my head.

the GAG Handbook also provides suggested prices based on size of company and earnings.
agreed that it might not be appropriate to ask, but you should get enough info to make a good guess.

just make sure the gag handbook you are consulting is the graphic artist guild and not the gay artists guild.
that could be embarassing.
