Anyone know if it is possible to create this type of effect in AI CS3 instead of photoshop?

yea was thinking of using it within a variety of different shapes, with different sizes, so not sure if that will work.

ok so I take it it isnt possible in Illustrator....if not ill have to try the clipping mask's/PS route.

you really wouldn't want to scale it anyways, it would ruin the effect. What you should probably do is what everyone is telling you and make something in ps and then crop it, or make a repeating texture.

How about a half-way house? Create a non-gradiated seamless tile in photoshop, with JUST the texture in, then import it into Illy as a swatch and add the gradient over it?
