I live on the first floor of a 2 story apartment complex in L.A. My roomate thinks the best plan of action in a big quake is to get out fast. I might agree w/ him if it weren't for the large overhanging bridge connecting the apartments above us. I've always been told you'll be safest under a sturdy table.
Thoughts?

in any area known for quakes the best first action is to have a first aid kit and a paid of good and fast to put on sneakers and a bottle of water and some weed.

I agree with epill. The weed is key to survival.

Thx soler. Although I found this info via google that argue its ok to leave in some circumstances:
It is most dangerous to try to flee from the building during a quake due to danger from falling objects or glass splinters. Exception: only if you are on the ground floor close to an exit leading directly to an open space (garden or open space – not narrow streets) when the tremor begins.

install ropes all over your house hanging from the ceiling stopping about 4 feet from the ground.
during a quake jump onto a rope and hang on for dear life as it whips you around.
might as well try and have some fun through it right?

Well, talking from experience ( I was in Pisco, Peru when the 8.0 earthquake hit), you just have to get yourself in a doorway and wait till it settles down. When its over, run outside away from buldings and hope you don't get killed.

Yep, I was in the epicenter of the earthquake (Pisco, about 2-3 hours south of Lima). I was there on vacation with my girlfriend. Needless to say, we were extremely lucky to get out of our hostel without any injuries. It was total chaos when we got outside, wounded people, crying mothers, dead people being transported, etc. Not a pretty site.
Where did you live in Peru Madirish?

I hear you should get in next to something that would make a lean-to if the roof fell on it. (eg in front of the couch, in the bathtub)
