Strange question, but does anyone have any research material for design markets by country? I'm trying to get a rough idea of ranking by country of design consumption/creation.

no help here, but that is a very interesting question. i wonder if it is directly connected with the overall purchase/consumption of each as well.

You know, that's kind of what I thought. There has to be an obvious parallel to overall consumption as a whole. I just wanted to get some idea of who consumes the most design so I can understand potential audiences for design.

wow! an actual design thread!
May I suggest that the theorie of design production equals production / consumption, might be accurate, today I think is normal that most of us are doing work for other countries, not sure how big the % of designers located in countries where production / consumption is not as high as others. But might be one of the reason they are doing work for foreing markets.

how would you measure design consumption and production?
- Mimio0
I would imagine a lot of things could be considered "designed" or consumed as a result of design. In a loose definition it would encompass all engineered things regardless of use-value or aesthetic.

True Mimio. My interest is more in the type of audience by country that 'good' design generates. If the links here on Newstoday are any example it seems that these audiences are primarily in the US, UK and the Netherlands, but that's definitely a guess based on primarily the sites of creators of design. But I have to wonder, with the flattening of the world, are there trends we should be watching? For example, with Asia being such a burgeoning market, is this someone we should begin to speak to as one of the largest producers and eventually, consumers of products that need to be wrapped in relevant design?

Possibly, this whole thing would be informed by income as money is the thing that allows you to be selective about objects. In that case, this data may be applicable.

gross national design product = gross national landfill volume

this all seems very vague...
what are we talking about again?

i learned today that rand is the name of south africa's currency.
