In basic training we were taught to use a fuckin stick and our web belt to make a quick tourniquet in the field. This is the Marine Corps standard issue now:

so apparently people have been arguing about this moon thing for over 2000 years (that we have documented).
it's strictly an optical illusion apparently, as you can use calipers to measure its width while high in the sky and see that it is the same width while on the horizon. nobody has been able to satisfactorily explain why it appears this way.
