google is an interesting one to discuss - as it's a terrible logo, but is easily recognised globally.

Google and Yahoo easily have two of the more hideous brands around. It's funny to see the obviously talented designers they now have forced to work around the constraints of the originals.

----------It's the LOGOs that are hideous. The "Brands" though are very strong! - as a huuuge percentage of the worlds population would be able to recognise them at a glance.

(Nov 2 07, 04:37)I'm interested in this. I dislike both Yahoo and Google's logos. They obviously date back to something created by an amateur at the inception of the company. But now they are well recognised, not through good design but through relentless viewing. Most companies don't have the luxury of people seeing their logo as much as people see Google's.
But it raises interesting questions about the definition of good branding – is it consistency, or just a reluctance to change.I think part of the reason that google stick with their 'naive' logo is because it makes them look smaller than the huge global giant they really are.
People think, 'well, the logo looks so crappy, it must still just be 3 guys in a basement'
More companies are latching on to this idea of immature, 'badly designed' identities to hide their size and seem friendly
