Anyone any experience using it/setting it up?
Anything I should watch out for. I need to build a CMS based site with a private forum, mailing lists, event notifications etc. Any other better "off the shelf" products out there that can be adapted?

I've played with it a bit. But not enough to give advice, other than to say it was pretty easy. Though I can also recommend Joomla - via a friend who knows about these things.

one of our clients opted for this as it was cheaper than us customising our own cms for their needs. it is also good because you get modules for forums etc (so time doesnt have to be spent building the things).
theyve got someone in house who has been learning drupal and building their site so i dont know personally of any things to watch out for.
they also considered Joomla but decided against it as it's future is "in the air" or something. They are about to release Joomla2 or something but are considering not allowing their users/community to be able to sell the plugings they build. this would be a grave mistake if they did this as it means programmers wouldnt have any incentive to develop then sell bits so it'd never grow as much as joomla1.
Dont quote me on that - but i believe its the basic outline. Im sure youl find more on it on google

Plone. different beast, but as for what can be done and handled, cannot be beat.
