Hey soup! I'm not only in your same city, but on your same situation.
I think the standard lens that comes with the camera is good enough to shoot small products, you dont want to go too wide or too close (assuming that your light cube is small)But then again, I'm not a pro.

For product shots, I would be using a Canon 60mm Macro or Canon 100mm Macro. You wont really get sharper shots off anything elese and the 1:1 magnification really comes into play with small objects.
shot with my 60mm
For shooting cars etc you might want to look at a 17-40L, 16-35L or 17-55 IS USM depending on budget. 40D is a nice camera but lenses play a bigger role in colour, contrast, sharpness etc.
Might also be worth investing in some studio lights like alien bees, will depend on budget but you should be able to get a decent light setup for under a bag of sand (grand). Lighting makes a huge difference too.

and that lens is top on my wishlist, from what i've read its your best option.
- so this camera allows you to view the image just like on a point and shoot? I thought it was the mark series..Meeklo

o\to original poster -- that a piece of shit lens, just the fact that it's 3.5-4.5 means that it will drive u crazy when u adjust with the exposure.
I would get something that's one f-stop throughout.
I just recently got:
Tokina 12-24 at f4 -- love it.NEVER buy Canon or Nikon Lenses -- unelss u have money to burn cause with those u paying %50 surcharche for the name alone got with: Sigma, Tokina, Tamron -- all make shity and great lenses if u know how to spot which is which.
- i don't agree. i think canon lenses are superior to tamron/sigma etc.forcetwelve
- I've had two tamron lenses, both were pretty average. Both were replaced by the Canon equivalents also. I know they do make good lenses but i'd personally always go for the Canon brand our try before I buy at least.db_gd

we got one at work with the 24-70mm L. nice camera, nicer lens. if you're wanting to make large prints, go for some good glass. and if you're taking lots of photos in low light w/ no flash, you may want something a little faster, no? maybe look for a fast wide angle prime, and then another more versatile zoom, like the 17-40mm.
- thanks for the tip man, keep em coming, lets keep it economic though, I dont mind buying usedMeeklo

yup, I almost bought from Broadway Photo (www.bwayphoto.com). Site looks great, super prices, seemingly legit (they've been around for decades).
But I was suspicious when they didn't show up in Bizrate. Did a search and found this:
