the spec isn't awful though is it?

pointless
- max_prophet0
how is it pointless?
pointless for you perhaps, pointless for all? What if I have a MacPro in the studio with a 30" monitor and travel to a lot of meetings, keep in touch from coffee shops and airport lounges etc etc?
anyway, you people are no surprise with your regressive thinking.
From a business point of view Apple have again garnered a shitload of attention with a pretty groundbreaking product to sit amongst their varied range, a range where there is pretty much something for everyone.
anyway, blah...
- it's 'innovation' losing the run of itself. schoolyard wankerylowimpakt
- admittedly I expected it to be quite a bit cheaper.max_prophet
- but a macbook not a fucking mac air that is twice the price.chossy

basically, any software you cannot download and install *is* a major pain in the ass.

1.6/1.8 core 2 duo... not bad... workable.
2gb ram. nice!
80gb 4200rpm hd... DOG SLOW!!! slower than your average laptop harddrive, this definitely rules out any sort of video editing, even casual editing will be painful. Add an extra £800 for the solid state drive (which is teeny tiny in capacity) then it might be fast enough but-
The graphics chip... the Intel GMA X3100 is gonna make any 3D work on it a grinding experience, and if you're really thinking about games, WOW may just about run on this thing...
So... it's kinda over the top for word processing.. web browsing... and general lighter tasks but it doesn't really make the cut for any creative work... I'm confused.

jeesus krist people.
i am in no way beating the fan-boy drum, but ferfucksake, this thing is and never will be intended for video editing, gaming, 3D work, or serving all your streaming porn to the web. honestly, do people think that every product is intended to do everything? why would anyone want to edit dv on an LED screen when it cannot even calibrate correctly? i am finding it astonishing that the clear use(s) for this machine are not more clear.
it could fail, and that is fine, but do you really think apple wants to put out another super-powerful laptop when they have 2 others that pretty much rule that arena? not to mention the fucking mind-pounding pain that would come with anyone trying to edit dv on a 13 inch screen..... and wanting that as a 'feature'.

Yeah, because I think Apple should always cater to my needs. I put out my argument right there, it's pretty much a regular old macbook, in some respects its slower but it costs a whole lot more.
And I don't expect it to run 3D, someone else was asking...

Price point is high no matter how you look at it
- tank020
uhm i can still do 3d work on my old powerbook.
it wil run cinema 4D and creative suite just fine,
just don't use it as render machine offcourse...

Like k0na, I believe it's innovative and more companies will DEFINITELY copy it soon. But it's too expensive for my liking (like most Apple products), and I would never buy the first version of anything (even if the Macbook has existed for some time, there are significant changes....enough to make it seem like a totally new product) by Apple. I love the thinness and the aluminum shell, but dislike the crap about the CD / DVDs Steve Jobs was spewing.

That's something people may get used to, but it's really weird, I agree, chossy.
2 more things I have issues with:
1) still no copy + paste on the iPhone
2) the iPhone upgrade is free, but the iTouch (or whatever it's called) upgrade costs $20. If they made the update cost $2 or something, people would probably ask why it wasn't just free, since it costs so little. So Apple probably wanted to make the price higher and justify it by saying that you would get some great updates / apps.

I appreciate the touchpad imitating the interactivity of the iPhone though. It would be useful for some designers.

By the way, the SSD 64GB HD is like $1000 more, I believe. Seagate usually charges $2500. I think it's not that worth it at this point. Maybe see if others do it first and then see how long it lasts.
I like that the new keyboard is backlit.

iPhone apps (mail, notes, google maps, have been available for iPod Touch for long, alongside apps that do basically what this update does. You just need to jailbreak the iPod and that's easy.
Apple have just multiplied the amount of jailbroken iPods telling people to pay up for the update.
