I work at a regional magazine. Daily my soul burns slowly as I sell my soul to this bullsh!t. But I'm trying to stay in this job for a significant amount of time so it doesn't look like I jump from job to job. I'm only 2 years out of school and I've got freelance work, but not much on the job experience. Plus, I don't want to leave a job without getting another job.
What are some of the design jobs you've had that you hated everything about? ...the people, the product, everything...
What did you do about it? Make the best of the time you had to be there? Quit? Stick it out, upgrade the folio, and get something better?
I want to see various outlooks on situations like my own...I'm good at what I do, but the publication I'm at is very bland and I try my best, but they are all close minded folks.

Where is the embarrassment here? Are you showing your penis to the secretary and she laughed, just a little bit? Is that it? I'm lost, really...

Were you trying to reheat two-day old coffee and the IT guys started podcasting about it on the company intranet? What?

I'd say stick it out for the year mark and turn your brain off and find good freelance work that you are happy with and get the folio bumpin'. I've been in your shoes. Crappy magazine, but did my best to change it, also grew into the position of art director. Looks good on the resume.
- Is this in response to my penis rubbing post?Studiospooky
- so you were Art Director for a crappy magazine? Neat.flashbender

i worked at kinkos for a year after I moved, i had no design experience and i wanted some sort of printing experience. the only thing that kept me sane was printing my own shit whenever i could and not working the counter.

I once worked for an utter psychopath – he was German or Dutch or something. eg, on a Friday afternoon, he handed me a beer and engaged me in conversation. After a few minutes he stopped mid-sentence and berated me for slacking off and yelled about how expensive I was and how he was going to dock my pay for wasting time – a real whack-job.
- Not that being German or Dutch necessarily makes him a psycho...MrOneHundred
- or does it.....mitee_
- Yeah, it probably does.MrOneHundred

any design job beats the shit out of working at Starbucks. Do everything you can to learn from the experience and do the best work you can. You have a choice everyday, if you do everything to the best of your ability and take pride in the process you will grow as a designer. brains has the right idea.
- And you will gain respect as a designer from your peers.creative-

Yes, I would take the following path (the one you mentioned):
A) Keep your current job (as you ... need money).
B) Force yourself to keep your folio updated.
C) Get your resume cleaned up and current ... I've found some good jobs through Monster, bizarre as it sounds. Also Krop, try to get postings on QBN, NTMY, that kind of thing ...
D) LinkedIn kicks ass. Networking kicks ass. Also, if you see something your interested in, don't be discouraged if they're not hiring. Drop by "just to see the place", learn about what they do, that sort of thing. Shows interest. Worked for me -- I start my new job in 2 weeks :)
That was a very self-serving post, but I hope in some way it helps. Good luck!

the trick is to find somewhere thats good for you. stick at it and see how you get on. I was 2 years out of school and was ready to pack it in a year later i and already learnt twice as much and got much better work.
dont close your options though, always be on the look out.
good luck.

If you're young and you detest your job then you will likely detest your next job and so on. Learn to not be a malcontent.
