To make a long story short, shit happened.. and we are reduced to using coil binding for this brochure. ( not our fault..). I was wondering if there were any other binding methods, or different ways to present the coil binding, or different finishes for the coil binding. We have thought of binding the brochure with 2-3 smaller coil binding sections ( one the top, bottom, and/or middle). And also, having the cover spine wrap around the coil binding so you cant see it on the outside. Any other thoughts or suggestions would be RAD. Thanks!

I hate the feel of those things that are coil binded, but try to hide the fact behind a foldy out flappy cover. It doesn;t hide it, it just makes a mockery of trying to hide it. Just have the coil binding on show and move on.
The little 2" bind sections look a bit nicer on first glance but actually they make a document hard to operate if its opened on an a curve, so again in my humble opinion just go for the bog standard workhorse coil.
- i know. we have no choice but to go with the coil.. just askin'jnnbugg

i understand that. But compared to what we were going to do its a huge let down for the clients. I was just asking to see if there were other methods..or different types of coil binding.

You could extend the page to include a margin and have brass screws but then the document won't open flat out.
Have to ask: why are you reduced to coil binding when a wire stitch should be much cheaper anyway, even on a short run?

i'm jealous.. i'd love to coil bind an offset printed catalogue. can look really slick and love the flat open page spreads.

We have tabs at the bottom. The paper is thin. So our idea of a perfect bound/ exposed cheese cloth idea doesn't work because the pages dont have enough surface area to hold the glue. It was either coil or tape and staples. We see the book laying flat as more important.

and again.. just to clarify..im not against coil binding.. but the clients are. :)

Have you talked to a few finishing houses and bookbinders about that? Seesm to me that you should be able to acheive it if shop around for soemone with commensurate experience, but aside from that having read what you're doing I agree with Horton and maybe its time to appreciate the qualities of the coil bind.
- yes we have. I appreciate coil., yes i do, i appreciate coil how bout you!.jnnbugg
- I've used it lots in the past - things like fashion lookbooks - and I love it in the right setting.Studiospooky
