not sure what you mean?
i don't live in london. i use bt to rent my line and www.f2s.com as a service provider. no problems.
i'm sure the islington will be over run with wi-fi networks you can hack into?

I'm looking for recommendations on phone and internet connection providers

why don't you just sit in a cafe with your macbook like all the other cunts in islington. ;)

Be Broadband has amazing customer service and offers up to 24Mbps but you're pretty much a slave to BT. If you can live with that and aren't too far away from a local exchange, it's a great service.

just spoke to talk talk, Be, BT, and virgin.
bt are trying to charge me £125 to reinstall the line, and will take up to 12 days to do it.Virgin will connect me for next to nothing and have me up and running in a couple of days,
the only thing that concerns me is the upload speed. 400k for a 4mb line an 70k for a 20 mb.... wtf!crazy!

with virgin are you getting cable or adsl?
'cause months ago i was in the same situation and i was thinking to go with virgin, since on the website they claimed that my area was covered by cable. When i ringed them up they told me that i can get just adsl, 20 mbit (nominal) adsl but no cable AND i needed to reactivate BT.
So, after sayng fuckoff to virgin i ringed BT and i asked to reactivate the line. And then go with bethere
the 125 fee is subivided into 10.something per month on your bill, so doesn't hurt so much. One advice about be: check the wiring status of your home. (and the distance from the exchange) I get no more than 7Mbit in download cause my wiring is really old.
Btw excellent customer service (I spent a whole afternoon at the phone trying to sort out the speed problem)

The fuckers claim on the website that "you are in a cable area, you can get up to 20 mbit", until they ask you a phone number (which you don't have if your phone is off) and when you ring them to sign in you discover the bitter truth

One quick note on BT and Virgin -
I had Virgin for two years in West Kensington and the service and speed were fantastic. Avg - 270kbps downloads / 70kpbs uploads with no downtime and a very population dense area.
I had to switch to ADSL (we're not in a cabled area) and dealing with BT has been a nightmare. It took us 5 weeks to get a line activated (NOT installed, mind you). If you can avoid them, do so, but if not - Be is a really good provider once you get past the ol' line rental thing.

Phoning Virgin will get you a better deal too. Ask them to make you an offer.

Cool, whereabouts in Islington you moving to, Stugoo?
If you're going with Virgin - ASK THEM ABOUT THE CONTENTION RATIO ON YOUR LINE. If they can't offer you any guarantees about your 'average' lower rates, consider paying someone else a little more who will.
