Good to see. I know it's just a start but hopefully will stimulate debate?

Every living former prime minister is there...
...except Howard. Fucking perfect!
- Llyod0
so they say sorry for stealing land and that's it? ehehehe
- they are saying sorry for the stolen generation - until the 60s aboriginal children were being forcibly taken from their parents and put into orphanages by the state.vespa
- and put into orphanages by the state, they thought this would force aborigines to integrate into white australian culture :(vespa

good to see Peter Garrett as Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts

About f'n time!!!!

...and for a lot of other stuff. It’s more symbolic. It should hopefully allow the Government to start acknowledging indigenous Aussies as equals and make room for some discussions. It (not apologising) is like punching someone in the face and pretending that nothing happened and expecting them to have respect for you and that you have respect for them.

I wasn't even aware of this whole thing until that movie "Rabbit Proof Fence" came out years ago.

Pretty much every group of people (country) has subjugated a different group of people sometime in history.
What I want to know is when the Saxons and Angles are going to aplologize for what they did to the Picts.
Or when the Scandinavians are going to apologize for what they did to coastal europe.
or when the Huns are going apologize for what they did to central asia.
Or when the egyptians are going to apologize for what they did to the Jews
or the Jews are going to apologize for what they did to the cannanites
Or the italians are going to apologize for what the rmonas did to pretty much everybody.
My point is that it is not nice, its not friendly, but that's what countries do to each other. Hell it continues to this day if you look at whats going on in Africa and Turkey vs. the Kurds or Taiwan vs. China.
I think it is great that the Aussie gov't stepped up and was the first country to do it, but given the history of mankind I don't think any real change will come out of it.
Everyone should now go watch Once Were Warriors.
- Once were warriors, you do realise thats a New Zealand film right?weave

i love midnight oil...
- MrOneHundred0
I agree that probably no real change will come of it – I hope I’m wrong, but at least we have a Government now who isn’t just saying “Fuck ’em”. At least change has some chance now. It also signals that this Government at least wants to be different to the last pathetic, sycophantic, anti social-reformist one... maybe I should stop...
- even if the only outcome is to stimulate debate, it is a good thing.vespa

flashbender this is mainly about the stolen generation, and that was going on as late as the 60s.
the government have refused to acknowledge that it was wrong to remove aboriginal children from their parents - those families are still trying to come to terms with the effects today.
no go and watch rabbit proof fence.
- already saw Rabbit Proof Fence and the US did the exact thing to Native Americans, so I am familiar with >flashbender
- with and invading government "assimilating" the children of the subjugated peopleflashbender

Just found this - John Pilger says Sorry Day is an event "without substance" geared towards white Australians, not indigenous people.
- What a twat. A headline-grabbing, grandstanding twat.MrOneHundred
- Perfect time for fuckwitts to get in the news.toe_knee
- MrOneHundred0
Surely if it was geared towards white Australians they would have done what the last government did – fuck all! Why bother? I think this guys fist is geared towards his own arse.

I don’t think he is doing his credibility much good by popping up and naysaying while the Prime Minister’s speech is still reverberating. He says on one hand that there needs to be action to follow-up the words, but then ensures us that there won’t be action. If he’s not part of the solution... but wait, I forgot, he is unveiling “The World’s Biggest Poem™” at the Opera House. And his bit doesn’t even rhyme!
- vespa0
how is he ensuring there won't be action?
"He called on ordinary Australians not to celebrate Sorry Day unless they were going to take action on indigenous issues."
i think that's a fair point. he's saying let's not get all self-congratulatory and allow ourselves to think that saying sorry will actually fix anything. he's saying we need to keep up the pressure to ensure things actually change.
the way it's been reported is antagonistic too: "Pilger Tears Strips Off Sorry Day", haha are Channel Nine using reporters from The Sun to write their headlines?
- MrOneHundred0
"Tears will be shed and there will be much emotion, but it will be over by next week."
<are Channel Nine using reporters from The Sun to write their headlines?>
Worse, they’re using Channel 9 reporters to write them. ;-)
