For those who don't understand why he jumped on the grenade: Hangtime before the grenade is set off is only a couple seconds- a couple of which were used when it was thrown at his position, where it promptly bounced off of him and most likely, into a pile of equipment or other obstacles. If he threw the grenade into the air and it exploded then the shrapnel would be at optimum efficiency, killing all of them without a chance unless it was thrown past some other large/thick object that would protect them from the shrapnel. This would also risk the death of civilians in the area as well as nearby friendlies.
- I'm guessing his flak vest prevented alot of the shrapnel, probably died from concussion wounds to internal organs. sad.TheBlueOne

if you watched some documentaries about soldiers getting injuried in Iraq youw ould know many of them get injuried by doing just that... a granade falls into a space/humve, and one of the franticly picks it up and trows away thus shreading the soldier's arm -- but still everyone survives.

That is some crazy training to basically end your life right there on a dime. If he ultimately saved his comrades, cheers to him.
Now, here's how I would have handled the situation:
*Grenade falls, har picks up. Looks at it for a second, amused.
"Hey guys, you ever see that episode of Road-Runner and Coyote where the coyote..."
*Boom*

my training would be:
-- wakes up with a hangover thinking how the hell do i sign up for this army shit
-- on my leave goes to Costa Rica and don't come back for a year or two

Wholly crap, he stayed alive for 30 minutes just long enough to say "fuck sake I tripped over my bayonets and trench coat tails. I didnae mean to land on that fucking thing aya bam this stings like crazy"
Seriously though what a hero absolutly without question what a hero to do something so selfless as that. I bet as he was laying on it he was willing all of his power to protect his men and to survive.

Did the article describe the room? Was there an open window to throw it out of? Seems kinda wack to say how "you" would have handled the situation better than a trained SEAL.

it was on a roof top......... however like you said who knows what the position was perhaps there was no way out. I doubt a trained navy seal would jump on a grenade willy nilly yo!
