Seems like asians are overrepresented in design. My last job I worked with one white guy, one white woman, 2 Japanese guys, and myself (half Asian). What do you think is driving this disparity? Is it because we're smarter and more artistic:D?

yes, it is insane. and white designers usually have asian gf's.

Strictly speaking, asians were 'over-represented' (it was 50/50) at your last job
If you choose to make it a general case could be because you are asian (half-asian) yourself and this is something that feeds your feeling of identity

I don't know anything about that, but I tell you what. Older Russian designers are crazy - and not necessarily in a good way

never saw an asian designer...
- maybe it is because you are tall and they are short and you just don't see themflashbender

I seen so many fantastic Asian designers or creative ppl in US and some not so talented. I guess is not really about the race.
Also Indians and Chinese are the biggest population so one day sooner or later you'll get hump by them. (I did and i love it!) lol

it all depends where you live I guess, I was surprised I didn't work with more Asian designers back in SF, but since im 1/2 Asian myself, me currently being self employed my current white to Asian ratio is 50:50

Well, look at the NT Asian Club. It has so many members.

Designers tend to be clean and like cleanliness (not always of course, but most definitely compared to other creative types). Asians love things that are clean: aesthetically and physically. In Japan, they actually think we're dirty, even though we're super clean compared to those hairy Euros. The Bauhaus legacy resonated deeply with Asian designers and is still going strong, both stateside and abroad.
- hairy euros.. hahamoamoa

i think the stat that has me stumped is the male/female ratio in design. i went to design school and it was 70% female. but everywhere i have worked it has only been about 20% female.
- most of them must have become knocked up or become house wifes somewhere along the way, us dudes dont have the option, "work or starve" is the story of our lives. :pmoldero

i did notice a high number of asian designers on my design team when i lived in hong kong. and our munich office was like 85% german. hmmm...

I think black turtleneck and graphic t-shirt wearing, self important goofs are definitely over-represented. ;P
I think generally that racial demographics would probably be reflect-ant of the breakdown within the city you are in as opposed to the design industry specifically. I've worked in studios and in-house departments that have had a variety of peoples represented amongst their staff. I can definitely say that the majority of people were caucasian with a diverse smattering of other cultures/ethnicities coming in second.
That being said I remember in school there was a very large percentage of Asian students.
