I'm in the process of building a site and thinking about incorporating widgets... so, if anybody out there has used them in their sites, please post a link!
I take it my options are Flash and AJAX...but the latter gives me a headache.
I like the <a href="http://bbc.co.uk">BBC</a> site, but figuring out how they structured their code is annoying. Still, I don't see many widget-style sites using Flash as the primary engine. Plus, this BBC site lets people customize what's on the home page, like Google, which is what I want.
<a href="http://nasa.gov">NASA</a> used the Apple-style drop-down widget thing, which I also like, but the coding seems like a nightmare. The site works and looks great, though.
Does anybody know of some good Java tutorials that explain how to create the drop-down-when-hovering navigation? I'm having trouble searching for these things, because I don't know what they're called exactly.
Guess I just wanted to start a discussion about widgets... why and how...

Some links you might want to check out:
These two companies provide a wrapper that let's you take your widget and be able to upload it to multiple sites (e.g. iGoogle, MySpace, Facebook, Netvibes, etc).
clearsping.com
widgetbox.comIf you're looking to make a widget that's more of a standalone application, something like Adobe AIR might be more useful.

site is for a university, and I just thought it'd be a nice way for students to get department-specific news and info on their home page...some customization and such...
