ive been with someone when they have done it. and its not good for diesels. did you turn it over? if you did there could be unleaded through the whole system and you will need to get it cleaned out. Whatever you do dont turn it over or try to start it with unleaded it.
You need to get as much out as poss.If syphoning keep the exit end of the tube as low as possible to the ground and you get out as much as you can.
When I saw this happen before we did exactly that - got as much fuel out as possible and then filled it right up with diesel and set off. the car ran okay but you run this risk of damaging the engine if there is too much unleaded left. If you can afford to Id have the system cleaned out before you do anything, if not get onto some of the petrol head forums and look for further advice (you need to be fairly mech minded)
good luck
- use a long tube for syphoning and keep it pushed into the tank as far in as poss and the other end as low as possmaximillion_

Thanks maximillion - that's pretty much what I did. I put in about 25litres and could only siphon off about 10. Not enough to risk it that's for sure. There was still nearly quarter of a tank of diesel when I filled it up and I had to start it to move it from the pump - probably 15 yards or so. Diesel is heavier than petrol so the petrol would have been sat on top if you know what I mean and I seemed to siphon off pure petrol. The dealer is picking it up today and will call me tonight hopefully. He reckoned between £150 and £200 to sort it. Let that be a lesson to you all kids!

is there not one fuel that is okay so long as you get most of it out? Like... if you put unleaded in a diesel, you can survive, but if you put diesel in an unleaded you'll have to get it properly cleaned out. Or it might be the other way around...

i think its the other way round Goradio - petrol burns ata higher temp than diesel (diesel needs atomisers to make a fuel 'cloud') and becuase of the temp it can do alot of damage from what i can remember.
jersey - from what i know 200 is pretty cheap for this type of mishap some dealers would want to strip the whole system and clean it out for a good chunk of yr sterling

Yup. £180. Don't think I'll be doing that again.

a buddy of mine put diesel into his dad's van and drove it for a while before the engine had had enough. A few bucks later ... he now pays attention to that particular detail (and so does everyone else he knows)

Didnt do that but at an outdoor party once I grabbed a water bottle and started drinking and it was gas for the generator.
It was the fucking nastiest thing I ever did - I burped gas for 2 days and probably should have went to the doctor.

=Fuck gas breath.
