i stopped using myspace a while back and converted to facebook, fb is by far a better user experience in so many ways, but definatly if im looking for new music you cannot beat myspace, if i want to check out a new band its the first port of call! fb can never compete with that, but that is pretty much all myspace is useful for!

dont know if its been said, but i do like how the new main myspace nav bar is now transparent, or, it shows through the colour of your page, so there's less intrusion on your design, if that makes sense? (apart from the great big fuck off advertisement of course) ;)

So what is 'design' then Chono? Lots of fancy colours and images? Can you only judge something as being 'designed' well, if it actually looks like it has been 'designed'?
I would say not.

Facebook has no "design", its really just a 2 color, usabillity theme. Cuban Counsil got of real easy on taht gig ^^

In response to why redesign, I am a bit torn. Part of me loves how horribly people have designed their pages. The thing is that THEY think it's cool. It's like going into their messy room and getting a true sense of who they are.
On the other hand, the MySpace experience is crap. Basically: too much going on. As a result most of the early profiles were over the top trashy pages that put a lot of people off. I liked this raw aspect of MySpace but most non-teenagers made the jump from Friendster to Facebook.
I think the important thing is that MySpace is not Facebook. It will never be that. It definitely needs to be brought to 2008 as Jevad said but it still needs to find a way to retain some of it's raw crappiness else it looses it's authenticity.

I never knew Adaptive Path actually designed and built stuff. I thought most of what they do is writing, research, and presenting at conferences with the occasional onsite training. Their case studies are full of experience strategy engagements but no builds--many of their samples are just wireframes.
There a bunch of experience design consultancies out there that are great but once you remove the creation of the end product, it is the onus of client to ensure tight alignment with the design. My experience has been that a lot is lost in translation.
From my understanding MySpace (Fox Interactive) didn't have a massive budget for this project and most of the work was being done internally.

MySpace is a MONUMENTAL success. Why would they change their game. People like shit - give them shit. Hitting the meaty portion of the bell curve.

I'm sure they are fighting a difficult battle at MySpace - MySpace probably doesn't want to change what they're doing too much.

^ Not just the design, but the experience. It is seamless, flawless, and they are constantly refining it.
- meh, i wouldn't go that far, those applications can be seriously clutteriffica_iver
- I think the constant refinement of a web service is key.DeviceUnseen
- not the applications - most of them are horrendously stupidjevad

this is why, imo, facebook is superior. the design is superior.
- facebook is a superior race.
Facebook power!!! hahahSoulFly

Jevad- you seem to be posting at night - I think you said you are in HK, that must weird, do you see a difference on the responses, or different crowd in QBN?
By the way, I noticed the rounded corners the other day on myspace... I didn't even hit me that it was a redesign...
I like when myspace has a huge advertisement covering the entire background- at least those ads are usually well designed! the the Hulk one they had last week.- haha - yeah - usually I am the only one posting! Me and the ozzies anyway...jevad
- You can’t dismiss us that easily. ;-)MrOneHundred

The new ads for the movies are stupid. If you've logged in, navigate to a different site and then go back to myspace the ad covers up the "Home" button so you have to find some roundabout way to get there.

myspace, new paint or not, is a cesspool

Basically they have taken myspace from 1998 to 2004. An improvement no doubt - but too little too late.

Thought provoking if you ask me.
Are we (designers) thinking of things incorrectly, are companies shelling out thousands of dollars for this abstract concept of 'good design'. When the average user doesn't even see the difference. I don't even talk to my friends about cool websites anymore, the website we say are clean ... they see as plain.
Cluttered, small text = futuristic
myspace = just another websiteI cant remember the word, but when a certain group of people become such connoisseurs of something that their taste outpace what the general public can appreciate/care about
- WAT?jevad
- I get what you're saying. I don't agree 100%, but that's alright.ismith
- Sometimes the best design is invisible. They won't 'see it' but their 'experience' will be better...jevad
- jevad: but does it matter. Thats excllnt def. of design. But what does it have to do with peps using/liking the siteMachuse
- everythingjevad
- The best design should feel right, whether the masses understand and acknowledge the minutiae or not.ismith
- It could be all subliminal, but it's still there.ismith
- ...but what would that have to do with the bottom line. Myspace puts a monkey wrench in that theoryMachuse
- the bottom line for myspace is that they are losing out to facebook.jevad
- the bottom line for myspace is that they were the first, they caught/caused a massive wave and they've hoovered up a massive nichekelpie
- ...massive niche.
bad design or not, they are huge and entrenched.kelpie - also, due to its use (especially for bands) the 'bad design' correlates pretty well with 'lo fi' ethicskelpie

Now the little stalker/child molesters (hedge) can feel a (very) little slice of web 2.0.
