My god how I miss Lounge72 and Pixelsurgeon. My design inspiration is just not the same without them!!!
I know they closed their sites sometime back but they really did mean a lot to me, anyone feel the same?

Ya.. what ever happened to them? Just lack of time + support?

pixelsurgeon was a really good website, does anyone know why the site shut down.
- Too much work. Jason & Co. started Wyld Stallyons and couldn't keep up the level of maintenance on PS. So instead of letting it fade away they closed it when it was still good.ximeraLabs
- So instead they decided to close it while the quality was still good, instead of letting it fade away.ximeraLabs

they probably weren't making any money off of it

I really miss Lounge72, I didn't visit Pixelsurgeon much (I still miss it though). When those two came down I had enough and registered here (after lurking for quite some time).

I emailed Jason on April 30th '06 about the site and he replied saying:
-----------
Not a complete redesign, more of a tightening up. Everything is being rebuilt from the ground up to be fully validating XHTML and CSS, with lots of nice little features, lots of new RSS feeds, a podcast, advertising, a proper editorial workflow behind the scenes (and other CMS goodies), an improved and expanded shop, and more!http://dropbox.pixelsurgeon.com/…
We're about a third of the way through building it
I can't wait!!
-----------
But I think the core team drifted apart and had to work on money-making projects, so they canned the whole thing =(

ha, I was just reading this old thread 'Design portals dying, why?' http://www.qbn.com/topics/537763… where we talked about stuff when Lounge72 went down....

Interesting thread. I'm Jason Arber, co-founder and showrunner of Pixelsurgeon until I recently closed it down. Thought I'd share with you the reasons why it no longer exists.
The primary reason is lack of time. Running Pixelsurgeon was like running a full-time business that made no money. So when myself, Rich (the other co-founder of Pixelsurgeon) and Chris Sayer (the then animation director at Intro) decided to form a new animation and moving image studio called Wyld Stallyons there were simply not enough hours in the day. Compounding this was the fact my wife and I also had a daughter, and as anyone with a kid will tell you, kids soak up all your available time and energy!
Another equally important reason, and one I'm not sure I've publicly disclosed before, is that I was seriously let down by a supplier who was building the new version of Pixelsurgeon that was seriously kick-ass. It had a ton of really cool features. But after months and months, the developer had done virtually nothing, even though I'd paid them (a small amount, admittedly). Seriously pissed off I canned the project. This was about the fifth time a supplier had let me down with a redesign of the site, but the first time I'd actually used a company, and the first time I'd paid someone to do it. The previous attempts were by keen individuals who had volunteered their time, but once the scale and scope of the redesign became apparent, they withdrew their offers. Very frustrating as I had no spare cash to pour into what was essentially a vanity project.
The design had moved on substantially from the link that Mallmus posted above. By mid 2007 the look of the site was completely different and more progressive.
It's a real shame that the new version of Pixelsurgeon never saw the light of day, but with the time commitments of a new child and a new business, I probably would have driven myself crazy trying to run it, so maybe it's for the best...
I really miss Pixelsurgeon. Miss the sense of community, miss the opportunity to interview pretty much whoever took my fancy and I miss the press screenings! It's gratifying to see threads like this still discussing Pixelsurgeon, which shut it's doors almost a year ago, which is like a decade in internet time.
Thanks everyone!

does QBN.com actually make lots of money?
- Don't think so as its part of the (mt) MediaTemple family, maybe they get revenue from the job posts...PSYKHO

Wow thanks for the post Jason, I have always been a huge fan of Pixelsurgeon, the reviews where honest and funny at times and not like other review sites. The news was always fresh and was just a fantastic site all in all. So thanks for all your time and keep up the fantastic work over at: http://www.wyldstallyons.com/ is just amazing!

Thanks for letting us know Jason!
I bet you could get an awesome 'open source' Pixelsurgeon site developed from the general community... It couldn't be -that- hard to organise...
I always enjoy reading your opinions in the Computer Arts magazine, would you ever write or blog or something smaller?

Hey everybody, this is Kai - co-founder of LOUNGE72 until we closed it down. The main reason for that is pretty similar to Jason's - time...
We (Thorsten and myself) started LOUNGE72 when we were students. During that time it was pretty easy for us to find time to update the site and to keep on developing it...After we both started working fulltime (and Thorsten moved from Germany to Australia) it was pretty hard to continue on a level that pleased us regarding regular updates and the further development of the site. So we decided to close it down, rather then to let it slowly die away...
- hey - the missing-link info!
good to see you here now (-:invisiblechamber

props to Kai and Jason for their posts ..seriously guys ....respect
I'm still on that other factor -- and that's what has changed over the last 6 years too. When you guys were 'at school' and stuff .... the web was a different place. Site endeavors were part of the web community, the design portal was essential to sharing information. Then things changed and blogs and the whole web 2.0 thing made 'sharing' the default action of the web's information. So that made less of a need for the portals, or in another sense, waay more work required to make a site (like QBN, tip o the hat) that people would find worth frequenting and useful. ......
i'm rambling, but you know what I'm gettin at..
anyways .....nice to mention the legends
