Just thought I'd share with you guys that do work with XP (If you're a mac fanboy, take it elsewhere please - both have ups and downs): I upgraded about a month ago to the 64-bit version of XP (Windows XP Professional x64 Edition), and my system is working better than it ever has.

I can now address > 2GB ram correctly (32-bit XP can address max 2GB for applications, and 2GB for OS - there's a little hack to allow 3GB for apps and 1GB for OS, but that's all you'll get).

The system takes a little longer to boot up than old XP used to, think that's because I have some hard-drive driver quirkiness. But once the system has booted, it's totally solid - I have had 0 crashes in a month. Before, crashes would happen daily - regardless of what drivers I'd use, even re-installing windows frequently. I'm pretty amazed at how well everything runs.

Running 32-bit apps is no problem, haven't noticed a speed decrease. I think it's about time Adobe made some 64-bit binaries!

I now use Symantec EndPoint Protection Corporate edition for AV/Firewall - works well, not bogged down like usual norton bloatware.

That's all I wanted to say really, I've had quite a positive switchover to 64-bit windows, and decided to share it with you. If you're system is flaky, I'd encourage you to at least /try/ it out a weekend or something. The only problem I had was my webcam driver didn't work. If you do wanna changeover - read a few blogs on it, there are a few things you need to think about.

But didn't Mircosoft put XP in the trashcan years ago? Why not Vista if you have a PC?

    • Dude, they just recently released service 3 for xp they didn't "put it in the trashcan"designbot

Interesting. I have read over and over it's not worth switching to any 64-bit version of Windows (mainly due to driver issues and alot of 3rd party software not working), but glad to hear it's working for you. I think you hit an important point, it's not the OS but the software that is usually not written to take advantage of 64-bit processors. It's the same with multi-core processors, most applications don't take advantage (although this is changing).

I may upgrade to vista in the future, but right now XP will do me. As most other people still use it.

Mind, x64 XP is actually close to windows server 2003 than XP. Explains why it's so stable. Another reason why I'm not convinced that Vista 64 will actually be that great.

    • vista sux a bigun, don't do it. wish I woulda sticked w/ xp. too much work to revert now.fyoucher1
    • Don't install Vista, its the worst thing you can do!!! Trust me...PSYKHO
