alright. i have a really stupid freelance client who wants a site with all links on it, separated by categories. i have it all laid out and ready to go.. but here's the thing..it's HTML and they just notified me that they want to be able to add/delete links over time themselves but not through any HTML editor. so far I can't find out how to load XML or XSL into an already built HTML template...got any help?

can you say "OUT OF SCOPE"? If they want a CMS management after the fact then they should pay for it.
There is a very simple CMS solution that you can find if you do a search. I can't remember the name of it but you basically just put a bit of code into your HTML pages and the client can easily update via this Web based solution.
- that's adobe contribute - mentioned below.airey
- nope. not talking about contribute. it's a web based solutionmonkeyshine

you could use a php solution. build a form that your client can access that will append elements to your xml file based on what is entered in the form. then use some php code in your main html document to loop through the xml file and display the corresponding links.

adobe contribute would help here.

Are you sure you're not the stupid one? You have no solutions for your CMS and you let your project get this far without knowing whether you needed a CMS.
Joomla works, but probably overkill.

a cms to put some links on a page? come on now. and what are they generating this xml file from?
just have them put the links in an excel spreadsheet, a column for title and one for url and save as a csv file. a few lines of php using fgetcsv and you're done.

i would recommend contribute for something like that - under $100

just rebuild it around a blog engine / theme like wordpress. really easy and fast to do.

i haven't read any of the other posts but i would recommend using wordpress if someone else hasn't done it already

these two i'm doing this job for don't know ANYTHING about computers or the internet or what they're trying to do. unfortunately you don't usually find that out until you start actually needing things like FTP information. so the solution would have to be REALLY simple for them to update seeing as they can't even navigate the internet.
honestly, the wordpress idea is the easiest solution for a job i'm not getting paid enough for. but i doubt they could even figure that out. so we'll see. thanks for all the advice. i've got some ideas now.

As mentioned above, the project sounds mis-managed, and should never have progressed to the point you find yourself at.
The client isn't "stupid", not at all. It's actually your fault that you find yourself in this position, posting help questions on a design portal.
Do your homework, communicate openly w/ your clients, have a process that you follow as closely as possible w/ every web project—you'll be a much happier person, and you'll troll these forums for fun, not out of desperation...
