I understand that the RAM in the new G5 is on two panels and that the panels are supposed to match (factory default is 2 gig - 1 gig up top and 1 gig down bottom)...
... so I just bought two more sticks... each w/two gig - I'm checking the manual that came w/my aluminum box of pure joy... but it's not clear on how to add memory that doesn't match in size amount to the existing sticks.. it just says the cards that hold the sticks need to be balanced... but doesn't exactly finish the explanation...
... right now I have 1 gig up top and 1 gig down bottom. Do I add a new 2 gig stick to the top and one 2 gig to the bottom... or... do I move the 1 gig from the bottom to the top card and insert the two new 2 gigs sticks down bottom? (that's kind of how the manual shows it... it just doesn't say how to match them up... if you can have diff stick sizes on the same board.
I'm stupid... help me... I need to get back to work. :)

pull them both out, putt the new ones in, simple as that

As long as the speeds match it shouldn't matter. It may be that if you do not install them in equal pairs, that it will not be running in dual-channel mode (though most boards can't run more than 2 sticks of RAM in dual-channel mode). If you are seeing two banks of RAM (2 slots for each bank) install them so the order is (top-to-bottom) 1GB-2GB-1GB-2GB.

i know the perfect fix-all for all macs of any type from any era. you get in an elevator go to the roof of some tall building throw Mac overside and watch it fall to its death

haha... nice, hellhound... :)
designbot!!!... you actually are supposed to pull the existing 1 gig stick and move it up top... and put the two new sticks down bottom...
... or so the local mac guy just told me...
*doing so now
:)

hmm...strange. Usually the banks are alternated....but I have seen it both ways. Did it not work the way I told you?
- he didn't try it your way...because you are an idiot.

ha... weird... moved the i gig stick to the top so there's two 1 gig sticks up there now... and put the 2 new 2 gig sticks downstairs...
... works perfectly...
... and what's odd is that the next two sticks I add actually go UP TOP in the remaining slots... leaving only two down bottom still...
... oh.. and ZOOOOOOOOOOOM... holy shit... 4 more gig of RAM is NIGHT & DAY on this thing... apps fly open... even this one massive PSD that usually takes 2-3 mins to open... opened in about 10 seconds max...
... *very impressed

oh... and designbot... the initial way you said to do it (the way i thought to do it too)... did NOT work... system only saw the original 2 gig.
- designbot0
Hmm...yeah like I said, seen it both ways. My system is the opposite (not a Mac). Sorry if I made you do extra work.
Glad you got it working though :)
