My god, there is so much. everyone else has covered the classics so far, so let me interject the guy that got me into jazz - Thomas Chapin. Kinda somewhere where Eric Dolphy meets Pharoah Sanders. Unfortunately the guy passed away a while ago at 41 from cancer just as he was about to really start making waves, but the few times I caught him in NY it was magical. I just love everything from the cool jazz era (c. 1945–60). I like stuff before and after, of course (E.S.T. and MM&W being two awesome modern examples), but the cool era is just sublime. It also synchs with the modernist movement pretty integrally.
