I wanted to post this for all you parents of small children out there who might be consuming Halloween candy tomorrow. While typically I am not an alarmist this does seem like an important issue that I was only recently made aware of.
The melamine contamination of milk products in China over the summer made headlines, but this related issue has received little to no coverage. China has exported melamine tainted dairy products around the globe and it has made its way into much of this season’s Halloween candy and other food (Mac n’ Cheese). It sounds like Europe and most countries have pulled any Chinese food products with milk ingredients, but the US has not.
Foods at risk: ANY food manufactured in China and potentially any food containing milk powder. US food manufacturers imported millions of pounds of milk powder from China before September 14th. The FDA continues to allow it to be sold. This includes chocolate, cookies, cakes, and even things like packaged macaroni and cheese.
The toxic effects of melamine are cumulative, creating kidney stones that can in severe cases lead to kidney failure. The younger your child the more damaging the affects. In China, milk products contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine have sickened more than 50,000 young children and killed several infants.

Thanks for the info... my wife's family in Taiwan can no longer purchase any food products from China... they're having to buy imported foods from the US and elsewhere...

So many problems with products from China............. more than just candy. But in that vein I will carefully check where our candy came from tonight.

Honestly, I don't understand why parents let their kids do Halloween. Most candy has always been nasty, even when I was a kid. I can't even eat it now.
