the idea of redistributing the wealth is taxing everyone earning above 250K a tad more in order to help out the people at the bottom. you know, the ones that have to work 3 jobs a day to even barely get by. tell me what so wrong about that.
- i agree, but your name might lead people to believe you're not to be trusted....bolus
- This is wrong on a few levels, ie. It justifies theft. It weakens the poor, who learn to be passive.rafalski

its pretty amazing .. a year ago in Australia we finally got rid of John Howard, the fucktard who ruined our country for 11 years.. who was lapdog to George W and generally wasnt very nice.
Now with Obama on the way.. it feels like the world might actually find its way again..
- 'lapdog of bush'...never heard that beforethebottlerocket
- obviously not a very big lapdog.. maybe he kept him in his pantsautoflavour

for me, it come down to a president's judgement.
obama seems to have a good head on his shoulders.
and that's very reassuring.

I was going to write a massive schpiel here but I'll just say that I feel similarly to the way it felt when the berlin wall came down, that for once I've seen a historic event that reflects the good side of human nature. Hard not to project those kind of feelings on to a guy who is just a guy, just a politician winning an election, when so much of his story has the significance it does in teh context

It was a joy to see John Bolton being a typically spiteful fuck, even in defeat.

Governments don't create jobs. Poor people don't create jobs. People with income of 250K+ do.
Tax them and then be surprised job market shrunk.

i cannot vote since i'm not american. but i will say that i supported barack obama to be the next president of the usa. i didn't support him because he's young, nor because he's african-american. i support him because i believe he is a good human being.
in my opinion, i like obama because he is well educated. when he talks you can tell he knows his subjects well. he's a great speaker, a great motivator, and a gentleman.
though, what stands out the most, i think, that when he speaks he hardly use the phrase "i will...", but he more than not will use "we", "us", "together". not "we" as in the government, but "we" as a whole nation. that, to me, is a sign of someone who truly understands what his people's need.
now that obama is elected, i can only hope that he will do the job he has promised. though i don't expect him to fulfill every one of them, not on one term, but at least he will bring a new culture to the american government. a government that will bring good to the american people and the rest of the world. amen.

tax them to the levels they were taxed under america's most fiscally successful administration in recent memory you mean? the one which didn't completely screw up the global economy by giving free reign to business way beyond healthy capitalist principle?
widening the gap between rich and poor and cutting off massive swathes of a population from the opportunity a system should give them, in terms of good health and access to education, fatally damages that system, cripples its potential.

There was a 3+ hour documentary on Australian TV last week about the election and the 2 candidates, and while I was already a massive supporter of Obama, some of the information it imparted gave me even greater respect for the man.
He started out relatively alone in all of this. Coming from a place far away, he managed to make Chicago his home, and for a time called Boston his home, but throughout all of it his goal was to help those less fortunate than him. They weren't from his home town, he had no affiliation with any of these people that he met, but he wanted to help all of them.
When he found that community activism wasn't going to bring about the change he desired, he moved onto bigger things, and eventually into politics.
They chronicled his life quite closely from his speech at the DNC in '04 all the way 'til now, and it cannot be disputed that he is an amazingly inspiring man, a great orator, fiercely intelligent, and possesses a wealth of other talents that the current president is all but completely lacking in.
The other comments on here about the whole world breathing a sigh of relief at this outcome could not be more accurate. We've watched the last 8 years in a mix of horror and disbelief as an administration has effectively destroyed the credibility of the world's greatest super-power.
It is my hope that by electing this man that the restoration of faith in the US is a real possibility, and that he can affect real and lasting change. The changes might not be obvious within the first term of his administration, but his election alone stands as a clear indicator that the US has had enough, and that they want change.
Last but not least, while the polls were closer in the US, the polls in Australia were more like 90-10 to Obama. There was nothing about the Republican mindset or their policies throughout the election that endeared themselves to Australia, or indeed the world at large. I thought I might have cried when Obama won, but if McCain had won, I definitely would have cried.- There were three candidates...thebottlerocket

For my entire adult voting life I've lived through a series of political disappointments.
As an Australian I saw John Howard elected twice -- a racist, spineless, backward looking conservative. (I appreciate that most of you will be saying "who"?)
Then when I moved to the UK I witnessed massive popular movements against going into Iraq -- we still went in and Tony Blair and George W still benefited from majority votes and they still made personal fortunes from ordinary peoples' misery.
It became harder and harder not to think that most people are idiots and that the powerful elite would always pass power on to the powerful elite. You didn't need to be eloquent or visionary, just aggressive and conservative, to hold on to power.
Obama's election is of course only the beginning, and the proof as they say will be in the pudding, but just the idea of an eloquent, intelligent, conciliatory, outward-looking, mixed race US President speaks volumes to the younger generations of this world.
Most people are not idiots! That's something to feel positive about.

@sublocked. The internet is a British invention, try Googling Tim Berners-Lee fella? The biggest change that will come soon is the USA will wake up and realise it is simply a part of the wider world, just like the rest of us! Well done Obama.

the question i have tho vespa is ... people might be still idiots.. but that just qualifies them to spot other idiots..
thus, its a reactionary thing..
the masses are pretty docile for the most part..

I guess that's the main positive on this vespa, this election appears to have (I hate this word, but) 'mobilised' people.
Got them off their arses... yeah that's a better way of saying it.
- autoflavour0
completely agree... it was a monumental shift in US political history, even outside of every other significant factor of this election..
the people have truly spoken..
