From what I've experienced Designers are typically getting $55 - $65 and hour these days. Senior Designers are in the $85 - $95 range.
- Freelance or Full-Time?
Also, Toronto is slightly lower than SF.pylon

What a pain in the ass. Take out all the periods.
Ok on top of that I'd pick up "The Creative Business Guide to Running A Graphic Design Business by Cameron S. Foote". Bad name. Good book.

Its always better to give a higher number than you expect, if they dont like it you can work something out.
You don't want to feel like you left money on the table, work is gonna suck after that.

Best thing to is find a job description of a full time equivalent and divide that by weekly. That will give you base.
If you want to get more technical, minus the cost of benefits (material / psychological) then add potential over time outside the normal hours. And apply the tax benefits that you would receive by going freelance.
Generally, the employers want weekly / daily so they do not need to worry about over time. You are compensated for your over time in full time status as material and immaterial benefits; long term and short.
As a general rule, doing weekly, you do not get that much more then full time person. I would add 10-20 percent on top of the weekly base from calculated full time.
Old but helpful

Shouldn't be that hard. Don't you have an idea of what kind of salary you should be making?

I like the the 3–3.5k.A friend in an agency in San Fran said $6K a week and negotiate from there. We worked together, but I was an art director, then.
Maybe I should head west again ;-)
