Was hoping someone familiar with video could help me on this...
I have a handful of Mini DV tapes and am looking for a way to rip them to my Mac hardrive the easiest way possible.
Is there a way to do this without having to re-record them in real-time? I haven't even connected the camera to my mac yet (need to go out and buy HDV firewire cable today) so maybe I am jumping the gun. I assume once I plug it into the firewire port, that I will have to hit play on the camera and essentially recapture the video onto my Mac??
Any help is appreciated, thanks :)

as far as I know, you have to do real time playback for capturing the footage

^Thanks for the reply.
Really? I found a few programs that look like they will convert a Mini DV straight to DVD, so I figured there may be a similar program that will rip it to my hardrive instead. It's going to take forever if I have to capture in real time so I am hoping there is a better way.
- I would like to know about this if does it with timecode.Meeklo

Wow, I really don't know. If that's the case, fantastic. I would suspect that the app may rip straight to DVD, but still needs to spool through at real time to capture frames. Just the nature of tape, really. But if you do find a work around, please post, would like to know.

well if you have imovie that is all you need to import your video from your tapes , then render an output file to idvd , but yes you have to hit play then the capture button

Thanks for the replies.
Yeah I just talked with a professional video guy and he said the same thing. The only way is to capture in real-time. Unless you want to buy something like this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr…Tapes seem a bit archaic, at the very least I was hoping it could speed up the tape and capture the data quicker then just playing it at normal speed. In the future I think I am going to look into recording video live onto a MacBook Pro. Anyways I am off to spend hours of my time getting these 9 DV tapes transferred....awesome.
