I know about the issue with banding on gradients between two solid colours when printing. But wanted to know does the banding effect still present itself if it's between say a black and a full colour photograph(using masking in phtotoshop)?
Anyone tried this? Nice or not nice results in printed material?

I've blended photos into black (if the photo is something on a black bg but needed to blend it into a rich black, say) but I usually do this using a large feathered brush in PS, not gradient masks. Its worked out fine, handy if you're reversing type out but don't want to reverse it out of four plates.

Thanks Ian, you seem to be THE man when it come to print issues. Been trying a load of new things for print recently having not done any for 2 years/

Yeah done a few with the brush, but some had to do at 72dpi and res-up as the brush couldn't go above 2500.
Do you add noise to your masks(2-5%)?

Hey chief, not sure about the masks, but it can help the blend to add a wee bit of noise to help stop it banding, though on a black it should be ok. If you do need to add noise, you're right in doing a small amount, I usually do 2-4 at 300dpi, any more than that makes the whole thing far too grainy.
