i'm on pc at work and i've been googling around for a bit on how to rename multiple files. i found a way that will rename a bunch of files with the same label while appending a number to it.
however, what i'd like to do is select 50 files and "prepend" a two character code to the files.
any suggestions or programs?

Try your command prompt. It can do all kinds of useful things like that.

Google "REN" or something. I can find anything too helpful but it's out there....

If you have Adobe Bridge it's pretty easy to do...
- don't have it unfortunately.studderine
- Really? even non image related files?D_Dot
- Oh, that I don't know about. Sorry...my default was thinking 'image files'. So much for reading.skwiotsmith

^ not changing file extensions. so i have 50 images all with FVImage, FV Image2...whatever..i need to rename all of them to FV_Image, FV_Image2..
ya heard?!- Hmm, the software link in that thread is fucked anyway. Any sw that batch renames extensions will also do names.Nairn

select all the files, choose rename on the first one in the list and call it: "picture (1).jpg" or whatever... windows SHOULD rename them all sequentially... (but it's been a while)
- i believe you need a space and brackets containing a number directly before the file extension.kingsteven

^yeah, im gonna try the software. the images can't have all the same file name with sequential numbering. otherwise, that option would work! thanks though!

pc? select them all and hit "rename" it will end up being "FV_Image(3)" "FV_Image(4)" etc
- rightclick>renamethelukeandrews
- they have unique file names so that option wont work.studderine

You could use the 30-day trial of Expression Media (was iView Media Pro). Excellent image cataloguing, annotating, renaming, web gallery generating program...

tabbing in vista works but not sure on xp.

Just use mine or neverblink's option, studderine.
I've had my suggestion installed for a few years now (came up in a previous thread a while back, which I couldn't find). I just couldn't find the bugger when I posted.

search versiontracker.com for some nice apps that do a bunch of renaming batches.

so i ended up borrowing a mac from IT and renamed all the files using the preset apple scripts. very helpful and much easier than a PC.

Bridge has something like that for the Creative Suite.
