I'm getting into the whole ancestry thing and it occurred to me that a family tree ilustration must be one of the most challenging things for a designer. I suppose it falls under the category of information design, and I wondered if anyone here ever tried to come up with a contemporary solution, or found an elegant, functinal method for presenting an ancestry on a page.
post if you know of something out there that doesn't suck as hard as the rip-off out of the box rubbish like ancestry.com etc
the text method

This is insane, this lad has 8000 family members and it goes back 600 years! although it seems he's included some of the info from the adam & eve tree above, along with some minor deities! If nothing else it's an exercise in html

geni is awesome - just had a quick play around with it.
would be nice if it could import gen files though.

Bump. I'm using MyHeritage and getting close to my limit of free family members (250 ish).
What's good these days?
