I agree with OSFA.

I understand your point, and the fact that women expect a ring these days, but if your fiance is more interested or worried about the ring she's getting than the whole concept of being married to you, it doesn't sound like a great start...

I bet you that if Hollywood movies stop focusing on 'the ring' and switch it to 'an engagement trip' everybody will start doing the same...
- I agree with that :-) I suppose it is what it is.Not_Just_Another

right on OSFA. i've never been a diamond kind of girl but that's what my better half got me, and of course it's lovely. but he could've also had something simple made without any rocks and i would've been just as happy. it's not about the material or the thing itself ;)
my good friends went to a local artist and had these really unique, hand-hammered silver bands made for them and they're probably the most amazing rings i've ever seen.

wow, I didn't expect the ladies here to agree with me...
But this is my thing, a ring is ring, it doesn't guarantee your wife won't leave you, cheat on you, or that you won't do the same. Focus on the real thing, love and happiness. That's all that matters.

I proposed with a ring that only cost a few hundred dollars, since I couldn't afford anything better at the time.....then we upgraded later. That first ring still has more significance than the more expensive diamond/white gold ring we bought later. It is a symbol of true love, and not money. It's all about your love for each other and not some ring.
Having said that, buy what you can afford. Usually you can purchase the engagement ring and wedding band as a set....then later if your wife wants to, they can fuse the two rings together. Good luck with everything.....for me it was the best decision I ever made :)

see, not everybody is into that whole 'Oh my Gawddd! Let me see the ring!!!' circus act. This is the woman you are marrying and will spend your life with. You'll be together in good and bad times and she must know who you are, and be in love with you! Not with a ring! If all you can afford is a $100 ring, go for it, if she doesn't understand it or complains about it, take it as a sign and split, for the next years of married life will be terrible and you'll be living a fake life, buying things you can't afford and 'buying' love.
This is just a novelty, like bachelor parties are for men, you won't die or be unhappy for the rest of your life if you don't get one right? At the end of the day and when you have a loving wife by your side when you are 64 years old, it won't matter!
I also forgot to mention that the infamous ring can also backfire. Most women use this to compare fiances or husbands and see 'how much he really loves me' based on the size of the diamond or the cost of the ring in comparison to her coworker, sister, or even a stranger on the street. I've seen it happen, and I know you all have been witness of this. It is sad, but it happens every day.

here's the ring I got for my fiance in October.
Ordered from BlueNile.com and they were great help with the process.

What is the average price for a nice ring?
Just wondering and not buying anytime soon.
- character10
I'm a cheapskate really so was thinking £200 - £300.
Just got back from a jeweller who was showing 30k - 40k rings - told him I'd have a think about it!
- OSFA0
wow, 30-40K, now THAT is love!!
- character10
I know she'll love whatever I get but just wanted something understated, unique etc.
Thinking the antique might be the best bet.
- antique is awesome. the settings you'll find are so much more creative and elegant than most modern ones.sputnik2

my parents got engaged when on a trip to crete. they were walking through a market and when my mom wasn't looking my dad bought a band with the greek link in it and proposed in a small chapel that afternoon. she wore it until their 25th anniversary when he got her a diamond anniversary band.
she says she loves the new one, but the original band still holds so much meaning that this new one. i'm sure it cost like $5...but that's the last thing that matters. or that should matter.

What if I can afford to buy a $20k ring but get her a $5k ring? How would that make her feel? I am just cheap?
- she would like it until she gets to work and the 'office expert' analyzes it and tells her how much you spent on it. Then she'll feel bad because the other girlsOSFA
- she would feel bad because the other girls, even the receptionist! have a bigger and more expensive ring that herOSFA
- Then she will start thinking if is worth it marrying such a cheap ass if there are guys out there that couldOSFA
- buy her a nicer ring, or that have a better job/status in order to impress her friends and coworkers...OSFA

Dude, you are done!!!
You will have to give away half/50% of everything you own or ever worked for in your entire meaningless life. You would have better odds flipping for head vs. tails with a coin. 57% of marriages end in divorce, and it does get ugly!!!
Oh I am sorry, congratulation:)
