Can someone explain what's going on at the moment/give me the backstory?

the conservatives had a minority government so the called an election but failed to get a majority. the PM then tried to destroy the other parties with a proposal to cut public funding for all parties. then the other 4 parties got together an formed a coalition, which by law is allowed to unseat the government (cuz they have more seats) through a vote of no confidence in the federal budget.
then it was up to the governer general whether or not the coalition would be allowed to unseat the conservatives now, or if she would allow parliament to take a break until mid jan. she decided for a break.
now, the PM is waging a PR war against the coalition, hoping to pressure them so much that they will have to opt for an election rather than a hostile take-over. If that happens, it will be our third in 2 years, with the last having the lowest voter turnout ever.

There's a minority government, and the other parties are trying to form a coalition to rule in place of the current PM. That's pretty much it. The backstory is kind of complicated and boring (and I don't really get it either) but the short answer is that this all started because the Prime Minister proposed a budget which cancelled the federal funding for opposition parties.
