Bump.
I got one from work, figured I'd give it a go even though I don't do much 3d.
Liking it, but having hard time to find config files for other software.
Just like in the OP, I want to use it elsewhere. Say flash timeline control and such.Nairn, got any config files for that laying around collecting e-dust?

This sounds like it could be very useful. I always find those aspects frustrating about most 3D programs.

I like navigating spaces with my knob

I've heard those are good with audio software, like ProTools.

I finally got around to getting one of these today and have spent the last couple of hours dicking around with it and I'm happy to report that my first impressions of it are very good indeed.
I've only tried in Google Earth and Sketchup so far, but already the intuitive physical interaction dynamic is making me completely rethink how I use 3D programs. I've been using sketchup more and more for wee ideas anyway as I find it a lot easier to put basic forms together quickly, but with the Space Navigator it's like I'm actually able to hold the object in my hand and turn it around. It's almost eerie. I almost regret not going the full hog and buying one of the more professional few-hundred pound jobbies, but this'll do for the meantime.
So yeah, if you do 3d and you don't currently use one of these kind of devices, I'd say 'give it a whirl'.

I'm fairly confidant that it's a good toy for use in 3D apps - what I'm really curious about is whether it's any use elsewhere.
I'm especially curious to know whether anyone's played around with it to get Illustrator to use it - and to what degree.
Digging around last night, I came across this software..

..which allows Mac users to modify any HID to do what they please.Which is to say, I've found yet another cool piece of software that there's no PC equivalent of. The tide's changing.

I´d take this one over to cgtalk. there´s way too few 3d pros in the qbn. and please report back if the thing is any good!

It's like a stubby, heavy joystick which as well as moving across the typical 4 axis can also be depressed, lifted as well as rotated too. It's useful for controlling views and objects in 3D programs, an aspect which I find particularly fiddly in 3DS.
- ah ok... i wasn't sure i understood... haha never heard of such a thing. sounds cool7point34

completely not trying to sound sarcastic, but what is it again?

It's only thirty-odd quid, so it's not much of a gamble - I just want to check before I dive in and buy another useless peripheral.

What the fuck is it? That's my thought.
- It's a multi-axis controller for your left hand (assuming you're right-handed)Nairn
