seems like it would be a pain in the ass. I admire anyone industrious enough to build their own.

But seriously, if you're building a PC for 3D modeling/rendering, put some extra money into your video card (min 256) and memory (min 4gb). I've had great luck with the Abit AW series, it's what I've used it all of my PC's – they usually offer a good front-bus speed for a decent price, which makes a difference in render time. I personally use Maya for 3D, but 3DSmax is the same difference.
- the workstation cards start getting decent around $350landock

512 would be better

This is my ~$1000 upgrade. I already have a case/power supply/dvd drive.
$299 - Intel Core i7 2.66 (you can overclock this considerably)
$160 - EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800
$299 - ASUS P6T Deluxe LGA 1366
$200 - G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600
$140 - Windows Vista BusinessYou could easily shave some money off by getting a core 2 quad proc and some ddr2 memory.
- i7 is the way forward - the upgrade path for it will last for at least 5 years, should you wish to swap for a higher clockNairn
- Personally, where the OS is concerned, I'd rather go with XP and hold out for Win7.Nairn
- this looks good. do you have a big PSU? you probably need ~1000W for that setupmonNom
- this is great!soynutz7
- psu is a coolmax cug-950Bamullins
- Agreed, stick with XP. I'm running Vista Ultimate and i get a ton of compatability problems with applicationsbooya

good site for builders: http://www.newegg.com/

thanks for the stats amullins. and for you mac ppl, i already own a macbook pro. problem is theres a license issue with 3ds max and botcamp that hasn't been fixed yet. The only way around it apparently is to buy a network license. autodesk is being a bitch about it.

vista 64bit is pretty polished now so you can get like 6gigs of ram and your shit will fly.

anyone have suggestions for the hardware configs. amullins hooked me up with one, but i'm not really privy to all the PC shit.
