lower your prices which means you have to spend less time on the work and more time looking for new paychecks..

Best of luck to you. I recently lost my job after ten years and I'm trying to transition into freelancing too...
To PonyBoy: Great advice! That's all I'm doing at the moment. Learning as much as I possibly can.

When it comes to finding new work, it seems like it's a good idea to promote a niche that you are especially good at instead of presenting broad capabilities. Like having a focus in fashion or finance.... Seems like people who are hiring are looking for the experience in the field they are in rather than taking a chance on someone without that relevant experience. Does that makes sense? Just trying to help.........

oh, the blog, damn! never posted on it! djeez.

to chuparosa: I may not showcase every portfolio piece I ever did on my site but I actually have case study work from everything on that list in spades. I agree with you about finding a niche. If there was a niche it would be branding. But the broad list of capabilities is out there so that people know that I can handle just about any project from a-z.

i agree with the 'niche capability' thing...
... I've found that those who are 'very good designers' aren't doing as well as they would hope if they're not willing to learn / enhance what they already know...
... I see you offer interactive / web 'design'... but do you fabricate too?
I found myself battling with other designers / freelancers to get nothing but Art Direction... so about 5+ years ago when I went fulltime freelance - I made sure to educate myself in the fabrication of what I design (Flash, HTML, JS... dynamic applications of your design)...
... I have to continuously blow off work - or outsource cuz I can't keep up with the demand still out there (I'm INSANELY busy!!)...
... but that's only because I'm willing to fabricate too... else I'm sure I'd be hurting.
I actually am developing other designer's Flash projects and not even designing some stuff - which isn't what I want to do... but again - I prefer to eat. :)
****BEGIN FREELANCE ADVISE****
NEVER STOP LEARNING!!! If you start looking for work with the idea that you're 'not willing' to do OR LEARN certain... you will most likely go hungry.

- No I do not develop but I hire the right people who do work with me on a range of interactive design work
Iggyboo - Like I said my focus is branding, and taking a brand from a-z making it come to life in whatever media it exists in.
Iggyboo - I totally agree with learning. I spent the past year switching from Print & Promo to Interactive to gain valuable experience.Iggyboo
