Which would you rather add to your set of lenses if you already had a 24-70mm 2.8 and a 70-200mm 2.8?

you working with a full frame camera?

yesser

the two aren't that comparable
firstly, given that they are two very different focal lengths
is cost an issue for you? one is like $400 while the other is like $1600...
85mm def. if you're looking for better glass and a wider max. aperture
i've owned the 50 1.4, and it's pretty decent. some aberration in low light... but that's expected

it's like comparing apples and oranges if we don't know what subject matter you shoot.

i'd go for the 50. seems like a pretty standard lens to have and is prolly the most versatile of all my primes (of which i have a 24 2.8, 50 1.4, and an 85 1.4)
depending on your shooting scenario, the 50 is the sweet spot.

hmm, well Im shooting pretty much everything and anything. Im hooking up with a fashion photographer this weekend and hes going to show me the ropes as far as shooting models and lighting goes. Its something Im going to want to start doing more often (studio work that is)

on a full-frame camera, the 85 will be amazing for portraits. the 50 would be better for streetscapes etc.
why dont you ask your fashion photographer which he would choose?
- he said the 50mmimnotadesigner
- but ive shot an event with the 85 before and man was it nice.imnotadesigner

I know the 50mm is standard for fashion/studio but Im wondering if I can do the same with the 85mm and maybe get some more use out of it.
- sikma0
I would say that a 85mm is more standard for fashion.portraits than a 50mm but either would work.
24-70mm 2.8 would be for someone who's going to be shooting landscapes as well.

this is just my opinion:
nothing compares to the quality of image made by that 85 1.2... you could closely mimic the quality of image from the 50mm with your existing lenses.all depends on what you are trying to capture, i guess. the 85 is my next lens purchase and i have both your existing lenses.....

I have both. The 50mm is a nice all around walk around, fashion and Pr0n lens but kinda lacks contrast IMO. The 85mm 1.2 is a nice night time dreamy wide open lens, very contrasty but very slow to focus and heavy like my mother-effer.

you could get the 85mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.4 - best of both worlds. the 85mm 1.8 isn't L class, but still very good. then if you find yourself using the 85mm 1.8 lots, you could ebay it and get the 85mm 1.2.

If you haven't shot fashion before, don't think that buying a very pricey 85mm will make it any easier. I sujest you getboththe 50 1.4 and the 85 1.4. Its a smarter idea!

i just checked your flickr too, and think a 50 would suit that kind of photography better. some really nice shots in there :)

errr am I stupid, but canon or nikon? I'd prefer 50, I have the nikon and am very happy with it
- Canon, but does it matter?imnotadesigner
- It does, we're talking specific models and they all have their character.rafalski
- I gotchaimnotadesigner
- imnotadesigner0
thanks Nightshade... what Im going to do is rent both lenses for the weekend and give them a run. I did want to buy one this week, but spending that kinda dough on a lens that Im not going to be happy with doesnt make sense.
- rafalski0
I'd go with Nightshade and harv, it's much better to have them both. 85/1.8 is a fantastic lens, 50/1.4 is a must. You'll upgrade either on the way if you ever need to.

I'm looking to buy the 85 1.8 as well. Just picked up the 1d MRK3. Very happy with it. Where you renting from. Vistek is the best IMO
- yeah, Im renting from Vistek but I hate the fact that they close so early. Makes it hard to get down there

I'd geta decent 50 for good street/reportage work between 1 and 30 metres range.

I could understand your question a little bit more if you were talking about the 50 1.2 or a used 50 1.0 but the 1.4 is so cheap compared to the 80 - just get both.
- mmm.... there's something uber cool about an f1.0 lens...Nightshade
