Nothing new here but coming from a 'respected' magazine...

the kicker quote:
"The beauty of our site is that it doesn't matter if you have a degree from the Rhode Island School of Design or if you're a grandma in Tennessee with a bunch of free time and Adobe (nasdaq: ADBE - news - people ) Illustrator," says Samson. "If the client likes the grandma's work better, then she's going to get the job."

They are working to democratize a snooty business.

"CrowdSpring eats its own cooking. CrowdSpring's logo, a clever silhouette of a man's torso leaping with the force of a spring below, came from a janitor in Toronto with no formal design training."

- that logo looks like a person flying in a tornado.bulletfactory

It seems like they are targeting start ups and would-be entrepeneurs, who never have money anyway. So fuck em.
I really doubt that real brands and companies who have put the time and money into their identities will be going this way anytime soon.
But I still hope those tools who started this get permenant crabs.

That's funny: their business is predicated on one of the most infamous design competitions in history. The Tribune Building competition is notable for having selected the worst entry from much more deserving designs by Saarinen, etc., etc. The Tribune Building stands as the second left foot of Chicago architecture.

Their site looks like absolute shit. The samples utterly blow.
"Gosh Tony, that new logo of yours looks like it was designed by a blind farmer!"
"Not at all, Steve! We're off the blind farmer scheme. We got a drunk housewife to do it on the cheap."

So you do the work, and then they can pick one? Sounds like a backwards way of tendering for work hahaha.

what would the opposite of this be?

what would be the opposite to this site?

what would be the opposite to this site?

Just wait until everyone signs in and the benchmark is set a little higher, or spreads to other industries.
Maybe I'm over-looking something really important, but in my opinion this idea has a strong revolutionary potential.
- thats what scares the shit outta me. our efforts have been ten folded by this. this is a good thing but bad for your work week.plash

I think it might be a good option for a small business with little money who just needs a logo cranked out. Not so much for a company that wants to make a serious effort or launch an ad campaign, since it doesn't allow much understanding between the client and the designer except in the most superficial way.
