>designers today stand on the shoulders of giants like Paul Rand, Weather they know it or not
I disagree.
Good design comes out as good design. Wether some guy like Rand made before you or not. It's not a race, no one is following in his footsteps by doing -good- design.

a lot of paul's design is playful. which is nice.

Some basketball players hate Michael Jordon.
Some football players hate Pele/Maradona.
Sometimes, we hate each other.

My guess is that Paul Rand didn’t bluff his way into getting the reputation that he has. Whether you like him or not is irrelevant. If he wasn’t categorically one of “the Greats” we wouldn’t even be talking about him.

As a graphic designer at IBM I think I'm contractually obligated to admire his work.

loved that imaginary forces piece on rand, let me see if I can find it...

El Lissitzky was better imo, but I have respect for Mr. Rand.

probably clear that I am a fan... perhaps because of the "don’t try to be original, just be good” and the (simple or not so) striving towards creation of work “with quality" (and an overall appreciation of the concrete beauty in so many of these pieces).

How many designers you know today, whose name will live for years? I'm sure there are a few, but that list should be pretty small. he was great, and I personally respect him as a designer and a legend of this field.
