We have that in Aveiro (a medium-sized city up north PT) for free. You can pick a bike (a "buga"), stroll around, and park it. When you park the coin is returned to you. Like a shopping-cart. It's working so far.

My mother once thought that JC Deceaux was the French JC Penney.

If you have Phoenix, AZ on your list. Well mark it off right now. People come to die here.

they had 15k bikes and within just over a year over 7k were destroyed or damaged with 5 people killed. they are actually telling the French gov. that they can't continue the program unless the government pays for some of the damaged bikes... right now all the world is looking at this program to see if it has merit.

Now to bring some reality to the picture:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/…I would like to find out about the condition of Bicing - Barcelona's bike scheme. I wouldn't be surprised if it faced similar problems to Vélib.

cycle safety rises when more people cycle.
those bike schemes can be hit and miss - the one in paris has been hit by heavy vandalism.

Its seriously a great idea.. not original but if the model works its something obama's administration should think about implementing. Problem is advertising revenue right now is not going to generate anything. But if your cutting back on busing systems across the country they gotta replace them I think with something.

Ok just watching this tv show about Paris and how JCdeceaux upkeeps their velib cheap bike systems in return for advertising space throughout cities... I wonder if something like that should be made for major cities atleast in the warmer climates of america.
