If you had to change job and do something else tomorrow, what would it realistically be?
All this talk of testing economical times is getting me thinking.....

I think that question needs to be clarified into either "in an ideal world" or "In the event of an economic downturn rendering the design industry redundant"
For me, in an ideal world: Something to do with writing.
If the shit hits the fan: Anything. Anything at all.

I'd either want to be a gardener or a cook - maybe a house husband would be okay.

I would try to find another job at a greenhouse. The most relaxing/rewarding work i've probably ever done. And you usually get july-oct off.

My 5 year plan is to ditch being a designer and run a winter ski/summer mountain biking chalet in France with the wife.

Gardener's labourer would be awesome. Early start, free exercise, tan in the summer and a feeling of really earning your friday pints.
I'm helping someone move house this weekend just because I actually fancy some manual labour – how mental is that??!

Unlimited funding and amnesty for travel and assembling research teams of people / for topics of my choosing. Would start by taking my friends on a tour of Xerox PARC, Google, Apple, etc. Attend lectures at TED, Long Now, PopTech, etc. Create various think tanks—basically funded safe havens for smart people who need shelter from clients and bosses—for developing new computer languages, human interfaces, music, design, dance. Hold conferences with my counter-parts from around the world. Send welcoming beacons into deep space. Create low-fi ad-hoc communications networks with DIY punk rock as inspiration. Equal rights for gays. Be a catalyst for a (positive) rethinking of the intersection of capitalism, privacy, and copyright. Team up with groups fixing the economy, creating sustainable industrialized cultures, ending poverty, hunger, and illiteracy. (But that's their foci, my group is more directly nerd-porn topics.) Marginalize religion to its rightful place as petty superstition. In addition to national anthem the US will have weekly rotating featured pop song, beginning with Millie Small's "My Boy Lollipop."

Something in real estate... designers always need space, so it comes naturally.
