need a bit of help. please and thanks!
If I have one master file, and I change 1 colour on a font/shape/object on it, is it possible so that when I change that colour on the master file, that same colour is changed on other multiple indesign documents (that are closed)? Or do all documents have to be open in order for the change to be made?

You could export your colour palettes and import into your document?

If you set up the files as a book any changes you make can be made globally me thinks.

I don't think you can update a file that is closed.

Maybe you could export your color swatch and import it in your others documents.
This would work if the name of the color is the same in all documents.

You can do that if you have an InDesign Book or with a script.

But the changes take effect the next time you open it, don't they? Not when it's closed. How would you know without opening it?
- you wouldn't, like when using smart object etc, update when you open document/?kuttyranks

This app may help: http://prmac.com/release-id-4051…. You should be able to do what you like as long as all the parameters are tagged properly and you use the book feature so it updates multiple docs. I don't know if this is possible without 3rd party plugins.

How many docs are there? It only takes 30 seconds to double click a swatch and change the color, which edits all objects with that color. Save file and repeat. Ten docs would take 5 mins.

Or merge the documents into one file? I dunno.

You could "place" the same file into each master page, and then when you modify the placed file, it will automatically update in each file (as soon as you open them, of course).

well ive got a project that could potentially have over 150 different colour charts. so changing each colour manually could become a pain in the ass. thanks for all the tips so far!
