canned CMS solutions do not denote the need to have a canned front end

I like how easy it is to build and update.
I find it limited though - all portfolios look pretty much the same.
There is only so much that is available for customization.

I, in all honesty, find it amazing how so many designers and such find it so amazing to have a machine mimicking or actually doing your work for you.
It's like having a writer saying props to a sentence mixer.
It only makes sense when you have nothing to say.
- depends on your skill set. A technical writer doesnt write poetry, or vica versa. Doesnt mean they are bad at what they do.baseline_shift
- they do. And there would be nothing wrong with a poet hiring a technical writer for technical writing.baseline_shift
- There wouldn't? I think there would be.Corvo2
- I see what both of you are saying, but a poet doesn't need to do journalism and a journalist does not need to write poetry, so why not help one another, and if you're a print designer why bother with webdesign if you have downright no intention of doing it. sure you're limiting yourself but that's a personal choice.FLsux
- Why? A poet isnt trained to do technical writing? Whats the problem with using someone who has the skill set to get the job done?baseline_shift
- the job done.baseline_shift
- That's not the problem. Problem is poetry is not about merchandise such as art is not about selling.Corvo2

- We may be talking about different things. I'm worried about contamination.Corvo2
- The point at which you must deviate to survive.Corvo2

i use it for a couple of sites but am getting bored of it

I guess we're talking about that thin line where talent becomes merchandise, and a whole new bunch of rules start dictating what you MUST do.

Its a medium to show your work through. I don't hear people saying that too many people use portfolio folders. Or 'too many writers use books to present their literature. There is a big difference between showing your work online and having a nice website. Horses for courses mate.
- That was magnificently said. Great parallels and examples.FLsux

well, writers don't have many options for presenting literature, just as most web designers aren't very successful at producing websites for mediums other than the web. but i would think an illustrator would more carefully select the cover of their book than, say, a romance novelist.

^ This is somewhat true. It's hard to cross disciplines.

+1 for what set said above. this debate is ridiculous.
do artisans shit on web creatives for not custom building and binding their own portfolio cases to present their site comps? no; a standard black portfolio with acetate ring sleeves does the job, as do indexhibit, indexr, cargo etc.
