So if someone were to be thinking about moving to north LA, studio city type area, maybe - does anyone have any recommendations for affordable areas that have good schools, payable rents etc ?

I was out there for work in Jan, and was asking the same question as it's an option on the table for us too. I've been told Burbank and Glendale tend to be affordable options over be directly in Los Angeles. Lots of studios in Burbank, like Disney/ABC and Warner.
- yeh cool. We could be silently distant LA neighbors, who call the cops 'on each others ass, like every night'.mikotondria3
- I am dialing now, just in case.harlequino
- Ive had enough of your wild hipster parties already, and we haven't even moved in yet.mikotondria3
- I am joining the crips for additional protection.harlequino
- ..people riding fixes up and down the hallway, girls with enormous white plastic sunglasses throwing up..tsk.mikotondria3
- Well, not much will change then. :Dharlequino
- haha :)mikotondria3

Good schools and affordable != Silverlake. The foothills and valley are where you want to be. They aren't cool areas or anything but you certainly do not want to be anywhere near the city for schools. About 30 miles north is Valencia. Basically a midwestern suburb. Close enough to drive into LA but far enough that you can raise kids.
- ...if a 1.5 hr commute to the city is is tolerable.mtgentry

Silverlake is a cool area but not exactly cheap. Some friends of mine have a studio in Atwater on Glendale Blvd next to Geoff McFetridge. It's a cool area, and much more low key on the check-out-my-scenesterness tip.

I live in Burbank and like it alot. I have been here for 10 years and its perfectly located (for me at least). Decent 1 bedrooms range from 1K to about 1.3k, more luxury living can run up to $1.8k to 2.2k.

i live in burbank, i wasnt crazy about it at first as its sort of quiet but for safe neighborhoods and good schools and reasonable cost of living its great and still fairly close to things.
- quiet is good. safe is good, schools is good. Good.mikotondria3

My wife and i live in atwater and love it. it's definitely low key, like rocknonstop said. I'd recommend it. it takes me 20 mins to drive into hollywood every morning and maybe 20mins to burbank.
- well that sounds awesome :). Got any ins on good accomodations ?mikotondria3
- actually, the unit right above us is open. 2br, central a/c & heat, dishwasher, washer/dryer hookups.
Chief - what are you looking to spend?Chief
- sniffing around the < $2k area certainly.mikotondria3
- that's right where it's priced. they've been recently updated, new electrical, new hardwood floors. shoot me an email if you're interested.Chief

i think you should look into alhambra, which is east of l.a, 15 mins drive on the 10 freeway. has a big asian population. so its calm.
plus its pretty green here. has trees and birds. :-)- close to san mario, and pasadena, which cost way more.akrokdesign
- san mario is like bel-air.akrokdesign

belmont shore, best place in long beach. if you want a laid back area. people say hello to each others, or good-morning. plus, nice ocean breeze. and its way cheaper then santa monica, etc.
its like living a vacation. hah.- only bad thing, you have to drive 710 to l.a. and its full with crazy truck drivers.akrokdesign
