I thought this logo was boring, and the speech bubble idea done a trillion times before – and then I found out it was done by Pentagram. I checked their write up and this made my blood boil...
"The idea for the logo came quickly: a stylized speech bubble, containing the word Lextra, that symbolizes communication and gives the Lextra products instant visibility and recognition. In order to add an academic and phonetic appearance to the logotype, a colon was inserted to separate the two syllables, lex and tra. A vertical version of the logo was developed to be used on the spines of books and dictionaries."
I can only imagine the big dollars they charge for their work, and to basically rehash the old speech bubble again – as if it hasn't been done about 7 gazillion times this century.
I'm hating posting a million times about Pentagram recently, but c'mon maybe they need to try harder and do more than just find a stylish font so that the trite idea looks a little stylish.

Clients arn not paying for the logo, they are paying for a 1000 page book on why it is the perfect logo for the client in these cases.

I think the logo works quite nicely and I totally understand why they had to waffle about it rather than say it took 10 mins to knock up

I personnaly have a lot of respect for people who manage to sell such logos and identity.
I do apreciate a lot works based on a clever idea and a minimalistic execution, and there's a few qbners who are excellent in this area of graphic design.
I have always wondered how they manage to sell such concepts, since a lot of the approach comes from the fact the audience (ie clients first) can apreciate a such minimalistic work. Most of clients I've met would never pay for a logo "which only consist in a typeface?!" no need to say they don't even know you can kern letters...or that font are not all free and not limited to the one available on their computer...
For them a true graphic design work, needs a lot of shadows and bevels etc...- exactly. Some people develop an efficient way of explaining and selling simplicity and even telling a story on the brand.VectorMasked

Its kinda like the fashion industry. Often, the perception of quality is based simply on the price tag, and whether or not 'other cool people' wear their stuff. Some people, with some money to toss around, are willing to shell out the big bucks for what they perceive as a quality product. That being said, most arent in a position to judge what quality design actually is.
I think pentagram makes a quality product, and as said above, their presentation is killer. Though they are not as groundbreaking as they once were.
